  • A 10-minute drive to Heusden; 15 minutes to Efteling amusement park
  • Fishing, cheese tours and well-stocked farm shop on site
Always keen to try out the local food when you’re on holiday? It doesn’t get much more local than this – Camping Nix Hoeve is part of a North Brabant cheese farm, with its own farm shop on site to ensure you’ll be well fed without even needing to leave the site. The cheese company has been here since 1968 and since then they’ve developed a range of enticing products, from traditional offerings through to those flavoured with cumin, pesto or even beer. (Intrigued to know how they do it? Book in for a tour to go behind the scenes). All sorts of cured meats, barbecue meats, free-range eggs and fruit juices are stocked on the farm shop shelves too, so it’s a good idea to bring along a healthy appetite… Not that you should find any problems working up that appetite – this location is well-placed for all sorts of outings on foot or by bike, including nature-filled days in the Biesbosch and Loonse en Drunense Duinen national parks or city strolls in ’s-Hertogenbosch and Breda. Castles, cruises and animal parks are all within easy reach too, as is the fabulous Efteling amusement park. Sounds like you’ll be busy by day… so it’s good to know that you’ll be staying in a peaceful and spacious site with lovely views over a huge meadow. There’s a play area on site for the kids, and fishing for any grownups who fancy having a go. The sweet village of Genderen is about 10 minutes’ walk away for a café, restaurant and supermarket where you can pick up any bits you couldn’t source in the farm shop.

Local attractions

Bring boots, bikes or canoes along to explore the wetlands of the Biesbosch National Park (20 minutes’ drive), one of the world’s rare freshwater tidal areas and a particularly great spot for birdwatchers. At the opposite end of the spectrum is Loonse en Drunense Duinen National Park (15 minutes), a huge area of drifting sands that have earned the nickname ‘the Sahara of Europe’. You’ll spot some wildlife as you wander, no doubt, but nothing as exotic as what you can see at Beekse Bergen safari park (35 minutes), which is home to giraffes, elephants and other big beasts. It’s a favourite with kids – and so is the magical Efteling amusement park (15 minutes), full of fairytale-themed rides and shows. The cities of ’s-Hertogenbosch (15 minutes), Breda (half an hour) and Tilburg (half an hour) are all worth a trip, but you really must find time for Heusden (10 minutes), a fortified town built on an island in the river. It’s a great place for a wander and perhaps a boat trip too.
