  • Family-friendly site with luxury safari tents near the Belgian border
  • Efteling half an hour’s drive; Nationaal Park De Biesbosch 45 minutes
  • Sandpit and indoor play area; vegetable garden; donkeys; pizza oven
The Dutch province of North Brabant and the northern reaches of Belgium are yours to explore from Glamping de Bosweide, a small-scale luxury site on the outskirts of Alphen village (five minutes’ drive – and just as quick by bike; or a 25-minute walk). Bosweide translates as ‘forest meadow’ – and there is indeed plenty of woodland in the immediate surroundings, which you can explore on foot or on two wheels (cycle hire is available). But you don’t have to leave the site if you want to experience the splendours of nature, for the owners have created a colourful bee- and butterfly-friendly flower meadow, and the shrubbery hedges are home to several bird species. You’re on a farm here, which means a bountiful supply of delicious produce. Reach into the trees, and sample ripe apples and pears, or wander through the vegetable garden to pick dill, mint and other herbs you might need for your meals. You can cook on a campfire or in the comfort of the fully equipped kitchen in your spacious safari tent. While on the subject of food… Freshly baked breakfast rolls are delivered to the tent every morning; and a weekly pizza evening around the wood-fired oven is an opportunity to mingle with other guests. Glamping de Bosweide is an enclosed car-free site, with a large lawn for the kids to run around on, a massive sandpit and a trampoline. Oh, and friendly donkeys to brush, cuddle and take for woodland walks. Bad weather is no problem, either, with an indoor play area with a range of games.

Local attractions

Tilburg (half an hour’s drive) was a major centre for the Dutch textile industry, and the Textile Museum has exhibits on weaving, embroidering and knitting, plus period looms in the Wool Blanket Factory. Residents at Beekse Bergen safari park, just outside the town, include elephants and big cats, plus hippos and yaks. Roller coasters and assorted thrill rides await at Efteling theme park (half an hour), where attractions also include a rotating Thai temple 45 metres above the ground, a fairytale forest where you might encounter characters like Pinocchio, and colourful shows with song, dance and acrobatic displays. Nationaal Park De Biesbosch (45 minutes) is one of the most extensive freshwater tidal areas in Europe. Its wetlands, which are home to ospreys and beavers, can be explored on foot, by bike or from the water, on a canoe or a boat cruise.
