What an introduction to the Limburg landscapes and Burgundian life… the cosy cottages at EuroParcs Brunssummerheide are in a spot that allows you to step directly out into hilly heath landscapes. Brunssummerheide, a vast nature reserve full of deciduous and conifer forests, moors and sandy plains, is practically the backyard for this site. So, gather around, cyclists and hikers: outings here will have you surrounded by shades of purple, green and grey (depending on the time of year) and meeting native Schoonebeek sheep as you explore. For a change of scenery, characterful urban centres are nearby, including Heerlen (10 minutes’ drive) and Aachen (35 minutes) across the German border. The centre of Brunssum is 10 minutes away by bike (with bike hire available on site) for places to eat and shop, but there are supermarkets a short walk from the park too. Those supermarkets will likely come in handy for snacks, drinks and supplies for the mini kitchen that comes with each cottage. It’s no problem if you don’t fancy cooking though – there’s a restaurant on site serving up breakfasts, lunches and dinners plus tasty treats like Limburg flan, all with a view over the site’s lake. Speaking of the lake, it’s quite the highlight of the site… this natural pond has areas for swimming and fishing, and around the edge are beachy spots and sunbathing lawns along with a playground to keep wriggly kids amused. Elsewhere on site you can introduce them to resident sheep and a pot-bellied pig, or let them get stuck into the various activities organised here in summer.

Local attractions

You may well spend a fair amount of time wandering the trails of Brunssummerheide, but there’s plenty more in the local area to keep you busy when you fancy a different day out. For starters, it won’t take you long to the Dutch Mining Museum or Hoensbroek Castle (the largest castle in the Netherlands) – both are about 10 minutes’ drive away. More kid-friendly outings might come in the form of trips to GaiaZOO, Kerkrade’s Discovery Museum or the indoor slopes of SnowWorld Landgraaf (all 15 minutes’ drive). A steam-powered ride on one of the Miljoenenlijn heritage trains (20 minutes) is likely to find favour with guests young and old too… For town time, take a trip to Heerlen (10 minutes) to visit the oldest bathhouse in the Netherlands, head to Maastricht (half an hour) to stroll around the cobbled Old Town or cross the border into Germany for a day in Aachen (half an hour), a spa city that’s got a fabulous cathedral and museums as well as thermal baths.
