  • Well-equipped rural pitches 20 minutes' drive from Grunau
  • Just off the B1 roughly halfway between Windhoek and Cape Town
  • Hiking and bike trails, game drives, swimming pool and restaurant
Wanting a bit of wilderness time, or just seeking somewhere to stop off halfway along the journey between Cape Town and Windhoek? Either one is a fine reason for a stay at Goibib Mountain Lodge, a smart rural bush camp around 20 minutes’ drive from Grunau. Getting to this south Namibia should be fairly straightforward, as it simply requires a little detour off the B1 main road. And getting out again for a closer look at the surrounds is a cinch too: hiking trails, mountain bike routes and four wheel drive trails are all around the site, and site staff can sort nature drives throughout the day (sunrise, morning, noon, sunset… take your pick) plus outings to nearby viewpoints and abandoned mines. Wherever you roam, keep eyes peeled for the wild beasts that call this place home: kudu, ostriches, eagles and other birds are often spotted by those who know where to look. There’s plenty to look at back at base, too, as the view looks out over the surrounding bush and beyond towards the mountains of the Karas range. Don’t give up on such pursuits come sunset – the outlook is still pretty special after dark, especially if you use the lodge’s telescope to peer up into the starry skies. When not out exploring, guests can take swims in the outdoor pool, peruse the library for local info or head to the restaurant for breakfasts and farmhouse-style dinners (with lots of top-notch local meats). If you’d rather have a go at grilling your own dinner, buy firewood on site and use the braai area by your pitch. Packed lunches for those heading out on the hiking/bike trails are available on request.

Local attractions

It’s recommended that you spend a good chunk of time here getting stuck into the various activities just around the site, but if you’ve got a bit of spare time on your hands, there are several fine outings to be had nearby. First stop should surely be at the Quiver Tree Forest (an hour and 20 minutes’ drive), to see the cluster of rare spiky trees growing out of all sorts of rock formations and crevasses. For more iconic Namibia views (and another stack of pics, no doubt), return to base via the huge Fish River Canyon, perhaps tacking on a soak in the spa at Ai-Ais Hot Springs as well. Aim north for around an hour and half instead and you’ll get to Giant’s Playground, where the rock formations are indeed huge. There may not have ever been actual giants roaming these lands but there were definitely dinosaurs at one point; for evidence, head another 15 minutes north for a hike around the Mesosaurus Fossil Site.
