  • Friendly woodland site in the Eisch Valley, near Septfontaines
  • Walking and cycling in the Valley of the Seven Castles
  • Outdoor swimming pool, bistro and playground on site
Pitch up with the family in pristine peace and quiet among the handsome countryside of the Eisch Valley, two kilometres from the centre of Septfontaines village and a short drive from 12th-century Septfontaines Castle. Camping Simmerschmelz is a friendly and family-focused site with lots to keep kids entertained, including a playground set among a huge grassy play area and a shallow outdoor play pool with bright play equipment to toddle around in. Meanwhile, grownups can avail themselves of their own outdoor pool, and there's easy access to plenty of walking trails winding their way through the woods directly from the park. A big screen in the on-site bistro shows all the major sporting fixtures, and if you're not much of a F1 or footie fan you can of course sit down for a meal, buy snacks or pick up some fresh bread there for your breakfast the next morning. As you're surrounded by quiet woodland, pitches lie in partial shade, with some on a gentle slope. Should you feel the need to see what's going on in the outside world, you can get access to the wifi service from spots around the grounds.

Liked: Level pitch

Disliked: Bit tired looking. Had to walk through outside bar/restaurant area to get to sanitary facilities. Bit awkward. Shower/ toilet block had awful sulfuric smell. Shower stopped after 5 mins. Had to rinse hair etc in sink as it didn't come back on after mandatory 10 mins!!! EHU kept cutting out every time someone plugged in/out of hookup. And trying to be nice.... but, the owner was a miserable bugger!!!! Defo not as described on website!!! Pool was closed, dirty and a haven for mozzies. No shop to buy essentials. Won't revisit.

Liked: The location. Toilets and showers were good. Lady at reception helpful.

Disliked: Pitches were small. Site unkempt, needs some attention. Fresh water not near pitch. Gentleman, not friendly, we felt like we were a nuisance to him. He needs to improve his customer relations. We considered going to bar for a drink, but decided against due to his attitude.

Liked: Luxembourg

Disliked: The husband who works at the campsite. He turned us away, even though on this site he had plenty of availability at his campsite, also when we turned up there were masses of spaces left. We made a booking and he would not refund our money because we left a review.

Power optional cement/asphalt and grass travel trailer campsite

Liked: Clean but that's about it

Disliked: Landed at 7.30pm, made to feel very unwelcome and not wanted. Was overcharged from what was stated on the booking site by 15%. Showers timed off so couldn't rinse off and don't turn back on for ten minutes ?? Why? Low water pressure in the mixed sex showers Bistro not open Bar closed at 9 for what looked like residents only (not us) Pool wasnt in use, empty , dirty. Planes overhead

Definately would avoid at all costs.

Power optional cement/asphalt and grass travel trailer campsite

Liked: Very little really.

Disliked: Site manager was rude and bad tempered. Pools were just pea green soup, with no explanation apart from 'sanitary problems', site was unmown and run down. Piles of rubble everywhere

Local attractions

If you're in search of peace and quiet surrounded by nature, you're in the right spot. The site is a few minutes' walk from the riverbank of the Eisch, and the countryside around lends itself nicely to scenic walks and pleasant bike rides well away from busy roads. The Eisch valley is famed as the 'Valley of the Seven Castles' – because it's home to seven splendid castles, of course… The closest one to Simmerschmelz is the 12th-century castle of Septfontaines (known locally as Burg Simmern), which presides over the village from a rocky ridge above the church. The other six castles of Koerich, Ansembourg, New Ansembourg, Hollenfels, Mersch and Schoenfels are all within 15 kilometres: a national trail follows the meandering Eisch over 37 kilometres, along peaceful forest roads, footpaths and cycling trails to each of the seven forts. The Oewersauer Nature Reserve is 30 minutes' drive north in the ancient hilly uplands of the Luxembourg Ardennes, which are marked by deep valleys, wet meadows, steep forested slopes and a high farmland plateau. Visitors can tramp the extensive hiking trails that lie around the lake's 42-kilometre shoreline, or take a solar-powered boat ride for a narrated natural history trip around the lake.
