  • Rural Tuscany campsite five minutes’ drive from San Giustino Valdarno
  • Arezzo 25 minutes’ drive; Florence and Siena an hour
  • Swimming pool, shared kitchen, barbecue and organic vegetable garden
Set among roughly 7.5 acres of Tuscan olive groves and vineyards in the Pratomagno foothills, Agricampeggio Borgo Agna is half an hour’s drive from ancient Arezzo. The site is an oasis of peace with a limited number of gravel pitches, guaranteeing all guests space and privacy for total relaxation in untamed nature. Pitch your tent in the shade of an olive tree and listen to the wind rustling through the leaves, hang your hammock to read a book in the sun, or take a dip in the clear water of the Agna river, which flows alongside the site. If you’re not quite brave enough for wild swimming in the river, there’s a raised swimming pool for cooling dips after a day of marvelling at art masterpieces in Florence or Siena (both an hour’s drive). Handy practical facilities on this chilled site include a shower block with hot water, a shared camping kitchen with fridges and sinks, and a barbecue area. You can pick seasonal vegetables for free in the on-site organic garden, or stock up on supplies in hilltop San Giustino Valdarno (five minutes). Alternatively, forget about alfresco cooking for the night and head to the village pizzeria instead.

Liked: Stunning small campsite in an olive grove, very peaceful, good showers/toilets (very clean)

Disliked: Was too quiet for us to feel we could play music, but this didn't matter as we were only there for a night

Local attractions

Agricampeggio Borgo Agna has direct access to hiking and cycling trails in the Pratomagno Mountains, where you can explore stunning landscapes ranging from Mediterranean scrub to beech and fir forests or alpine meadows. Families can follow an easy hike up to the giant yellow Big Bench #111 Castiglion Fibocchi for views over the Tuscan foothills, while birdwatchers head to the Valle dell’Inferno e Bandella Nature Reserve (both 15 minutes’ drive) to spy herons, egrets and kingfishers among the reeds. If art’s your thing, Florence (an hour) has way more than its fair share of world-class museums such as the Uffizi and Accademia, showcasing great artists including Da Vinci, Michelangelo and Botticelli, as well as spectacular architectural landmarks like its cathedral, San Lorenzo church and the Ponte Vecchio bridge. Medieval Siena (also an hour) beckons with its famed shell-shaped Piazza del Campo, exquisite striped cathedral and landmark Torre del Mangia – climb 400 steps up to its observation deck to admire views over the town and countryside. In Arezzo (25 minutes), stroll the remains of the Fortezza Medicea, see Etruscan treasures in the Museo Archeologico Mecenate and admire the Romanesque basilica at Santa Maria della Pieve church.
