  • On the shores of Großer Labussee in the Mecklenburg Lake District
  • On the edge of Müritz National Park 15 minutes' drive from Neustrelitz
  • Bistro, small shop, jetty and boat rental, swimming and waterslide
Paddle along for holidays at Campingplatz am Zwenzower Ufer, a family-friendly site on the shores of Großer Labusse lake in Zwenzow, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. This is a must-visit spot for anyone who takes to water like, well, a duck to water… Deep in Germany’s biggest lake and canal district (the Mecklenburg Lake District), the site’s well placed for watery excursions: start on Großer Labusse with a leisurely swim, or clamber into a canoe or boat (rent on site or arrive in one) to explore the network of lakes and canals on the Mecklenburg waterway. On the edge of Müritz National Park, there are more than 30,000 hectares of moorland, forests, swamps and meadows to explore round here – that’s biking and hiking trails aplenty, a whole flock of birds to get all aflutter for, and about 100 lakes to dip toes in. If stopping and staying still for a day or two is needed, settle in on site for some blissful hours. The waterslide, playground and small beach should keep the kids entertained while grownups laze around in the shade (or nip over to the nudist bathing area for some quiet time in the barrel sauna), and a bistro and small shop should keep everyone fed during site days.

Local attractions

If thoughts of Germany conjure up images of looming castles, stays round here won’t disappoint. Starting in the town of Neustrelitz 15 minutes’ drive away, explore the grounds of Schlossgarten Neustrelitz – though technically Schloss-less, visits to the garden’s orangery and temple should fulfil architectural cravings. Also within 15 minutes is Schloss Mirow, an early 18th-century island castle with a spectacular ballroom, pretty gardens and suitably royal connections – it was the birthplace of the Queen consort Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, wife to Britain's King George III. A little further afield is Schloss Hohenzieritz (25 minutes), famed as the deathplace of Queen Louise of Prussia, and for its fab landscaped gardens. When lakeside adventures are preferable, there are plenty of options hereabouts. At Schlossgarten Neustrelitz, wander to the edge of Zierker lake to embark on the 12-kilometre walk around its edge, or head instead to Müritz lake – the largest body of water fully within Germany – for boat rental, fishing and hikes. Try something a little different with a trip to Glasmanufaktur Dalmsdorf half an hour away, for glassworks courses and workshops, or embrace that inner budding zoologist with a day at the Neustrelitz zoo, 15 minutes from base.
