  • Glamping site on the edge of the medieval village of Sainte-Suzanne
  • A 15-minute walk from Château de Sainte-Suzanne
  • A couple of hundred metres from the Erve river
A glamping site on the edge of a medieval village… within simple strolling distance of a medieval château… sound splendid? Get yourself along to Glamping Sainte-Suzanne: it's on the edge of the Pays de la Loire village of Sainte-Suzanne, with its well-preserved and restored château about 15 minutes' walk away. This green and peaceful place is also a few hundred metres from the Erve river for hours of paddling and fishing, and is surrounded by woodland with hiking trails and bike paths, several of which are easily accessed from the site. Other activities nearby include horse riding, climbing and biking in the Tyrolean forest, about 15 minutes' drive away, or museum days at Le Mans half an hour east. Tours, Angers and Rennes are all reachable within an hour and a half. Facilities on site include a playground and a pétanque court, along with modern amenities including a toilet block with showers and disabled access. Within 50 metres of the site is a heated outdoor pool (open in July and August every day except Monday), with a waterslide, lifeguard supervision and free admission for glamping guests.

Liked: We loved the area and the campsite was friendly and well maintained.

Disliked: Note the swimming pool staff enforce the French rule about men and boys wearing Speedo’s (no baggy shorts). You can buy them at SuperU in Evron.

Powered cement/asphalt and grass campsite

Liked: A clean and friendly site next to a truly lovely historical town

Disliked: Sadly we were really disappointed with this site. The pitches were really small and your neighbours are very close to you, so expect quite a bit of noise. The showers and bathrooms were not very clean throughout our stay and having to hang onto a chain to keep the shower going was a real pain. Our biggest disappointment was the pool - this doesn't belong to the campsite but is a municipal one next door and was very noisy (it was the school summer holidays), not particularly clean and men are barred from entering unless wearing speedo type swimmers. There was no info about this on the campsite website and it caused much disappointment when, after a 6 hour drive to get to the site, we found out we couldn't even have a swim. The pool is also shut on Mondays (small print in campsite details). Overall not a great experience.

From the manager: For information our pitches have a surface of 100 m² minimum, separated by hedges. Some are shaded others sunny. As specified on the site the pool is municipal, open in July and August, closed on Monday. It was completely renovated in 2021 and is a heated pool. Two lifeguards watch the both pools, Speedo necessary (we have some at the office).

Local attractions

Famed for its successful resistance against William the Conqueror (not many folk managed to do that), the medieval fortress of Château de Sainte-Suzanne is a fine place to visit for all ages, with ramparts to roam around and a full programme of events including concerts and kids' activities. Guided tours are available, as are audio tours in English. As well as the village and château, the site's also within walking distance (three and a half kilometres) of the Dolmen des Erves megalithic site, the oldest listed monument in the Mayenne region. If this doesn't entice your small explorers, take them along to the horse riding centre 10 kilometres away, or to let off steam at the many leisurely options at Sillé-le-Guillaume (30 minutes): watersports, pony rides, minature golf and tiny trains are all on offer. Speed along to Le Mans after that, for a look at the Bugatti circuit, the red-painted houses including the Maison du Pilier Rouge on Grand Rue, and if you're here in July or August, the spectacular Le Mans light show in the Old Town.
