  • Family-friendly site near Langres and the Land of Four Lakes
  • Peaceful and green setting with flowers and plenty of space
  • Restaurant with local cuisine and shop with local beer, wine and honey
A Langres land of lovely lakes… with accompanying watersports galore. Waterskiing, wakeboarding, canoeing and fishing are among the array of watery options from Camping Hautoreille, in the 'Land of Four Lakes' of Charmes, Liez, Mouche and Vingeanne. And… you'll likely need to be active to burn off all le cuisine and plonk. Camping Hautoreille's setting near the village of Bannes in the Haute-Marne region is in the Champagne-Ardenne region, one of the many (many) parts of France stuffed with cheese and wine producers: sample some at the on-site mini market which sells local wine and cheese as well as other local products including beer and honey, and bread in high season. You can eat pitchside or fire up a barbie, or trundle along to the popular bar-restaurant for regional specialities; brekkie and takeaway are available from here too. And among all that? This is a lush and peaceful setting, in green surrounds with flowers and shrubs placed prettily about. There's plenty of space to wander; countryside walks are easy to access, and bike hire is available if you want to venture further (the famed old fortified town of Langres is seven kilometres away). Site facilities include a playground, table tennis, pétanque court and free wifi; the washrooms have hot showers, accessible facilities, a baby bathroom and kids' area with small toilets, and are heated in the colder months.

Power optional grass campsite

Liked: Very nice site, quiet and picturesque. The manager was easy-going and let us park where we wanted. Clean showers and toilets. Highlight is definitely the restaurant, which you don’t need to book and is open from 17:00-19:30. You can also order bread and pastries to be ready the following morning. A great Intermarche supermarket is only 10 minutes down the road and has a cute coffee shop and brasserie too.

Power optional grass campsite

Liked: Everything about the site. Very clean facilities, excellent pitches, great staff, fantastic restaurant/bar. Although the site was very busy, you did not feel packed in. The cleanliness and attention to detail at the site was second to none. I would have no hesitation in recommending this site and would definitely book the site again if I was in that area of France.

Disliked: Nothing

Power optional grass campsite

Liked: Good size pitches, nice play park for children.

Disliked: We had a very unpleasant greeting when we arrived. The man waiting at the barrier insisted we paid cash on arrival, however, nothing was mentioned on booking confirmation about paying total in cash. Had we have known this was preferred payment, we would have taken cash. When we told him, we did not have cash he was very rude and told us to go to reception and wait.

From the manager: Dear campeurs, We are delighted that you like our campsite, but, you arrive when the reception was closed, reception time is specified on your booking ... The deposit paid is for pitchup not for us and you must pay by CB or by cash the balance. And when the recption is closed is by cash only. I must also remind that you forget to declare your children on booking ... and we welcome them for free. We hope to welcome you next time and we are sorry for this inconvenience.

Local attractions

Get ready to sail, swim, canoe, hike or horse ride off all that wine et cheese, at the many outdoor options available locally in the region's four lakes. The closest to the site is Charmes three kilometres away, where you can hire canoes and pedaloes, have a dip, or decide not to be active at all actually, and contemplate the waters from the end of a fishing rod. More swimming, along with waterskiing, wakeboarding and sailing, can be plunged into at Lac de la Liez five kilometres away, the biggest in the region (and again, if you don't want to be active at all thanks, there's fishing for pike and carp, lazy lakeside walks and a sandy beach all to hand here too). The lake at Vingeanne, 20 kilometres away, is a famed birdwatching spot, and Mouche along with Liez and Vingeanne has a hiking route around its scenic shores. Townwise, the fortified hillside settlement of Langres, seven kilometres away, is a popular stopoff in the area, for its cathedral, Navarre Tower and several other ancient sights. You should also walk the town ramparts, three and a half kilometres' worth including seven fortified towers and seven gateways (some sections of the ramparts are over 2,000 years old). Within 20 killometres, more history is at the Château du Pailly, said to be the best example of Renaissance architecture in the Champagne-Ardenne, and at the Faverolles Gallo-Roman mausoleum, built in 20BC… even the kids should like this one. There's also horse riding and a treetop adventure park within 15 kilometres, or you could stick around Langres and enthusiastically sample the town's AOC cheese: best to hike around the ramparts afterwards to burn it all off.
