If you’re looking for active hols, here they are. CampWest SportResort, a family-friendly site less than five minutes’ drive from the southwestern Jutland town of Oksbøl, will keep you pleasantly busy from arrival to departure. The site’s got more than enough on hand to get started with, with footgolf and football, table football and human table football (exactly what it sounds like), outdoor BMXing, table tennis and pool all on site, along with a small petting zoo that should entertain younger kids. More leisurely days are in reach too, as there’s a fishing lake to plonk down next to or to dive into for swims. Bike rental and secure bike storage bring slightly further flung activities within reach too. Handily close to the site are a waterpark with West Jutland’s largest and longest slide, a treetop adventure park, a laser tag centre, an indoor BMX centre, hockey, badminton and tennis, and guided bike tours of the Oksbøl World War II refugee camp, all within about 15 minutes’ cycle of base. The best bit? They’re all included in the price of a stay. For longer jaunts in the saddle, the 560-kilometre West Coast Route linking Rudbøl and Skagen can be joined in Oksbøl, and a route around Filsø lake (and across Filsø dam) is about 40 minutes’ cycle away. There are some things that may require clambering into a car though: it’s a roughly 20-minute drive to the coast, where lengthy sandy stretches and salty swims await.

Local attractions

If tours of the Oksbøl World War II refugee camp sparked interest in Danish history, there’s plenty nearby to explore. It’s a five-minute drive to Pansermuseet, where fire trucks, armour and model cars are all on display, and 15 minutes to Tirpitz Museum, which crams in 20,000 years of history from mammoths to modern warfare. In Esbjerg, 20 minutes away, there’s a Fisheries and Maritime Museum complete with aquarium and plenty of seals. This is the right spot to come to if sea-based escapades appeal: it’s less than 15 minutes from base to the coast of the UNESCO-listed Wadden Sea National Park, and the Wadden Sea island (and bird sanctuary) Langli can be reached by foot or bus from Ho (also 15 minutes). Urban days area a cinch hereabouts too, as the port town of Esbjerg and its museums, gardens and beaches are 25 minutes away, and the city of Varde is even closer (15 minutes) for shopping, restaurants, museums, gardens, a model village and a golf course. Before leaving, raise a glass to celebrate a successful getaway on a trip to Fjordgård Vin and Vadehav, less than 10 minutes from base, for tours and tastings.
