  • Quiet, plant-filled site 20 minutes' walk from Playa Herradura
  • Around half an hour's drive from Carara National Park
  • Basic amenities provided, including water, bathrooms and wifi
Focus on getting the simple things just right – that was the plan for seasoned travellers Alicia and Luis when they set up Camping Sol y Luna in early 2016. And that’s just what they’ve done in their plant-filled place in Playa Herradura, 20 minutes’ walk from the beach and village amenities. No unnecessary distractions here – the basics are all taken care of (drinking water, bathrooms, wifi, lighting to avoid night-time stumbles) but otherwise guests are left in peace to find a sunny or shaded spot to chill out and enjoy the tropical gardens. And a peaceful place to put your feet up may well be just what you need, as this is an area packed with active adventures. Surfing and sport fishing are popular picks at the nearby beach (or a little further down the coast in Jacó), while those that venture inland can fill their days horse riding, ATV driving, canyoning and ziplining through the forest canopy. Have a camera at the ready, too – there’s excellent wildlife watching up in the Carara National Park, which is half an hour’s drive away and a great place to spot all kinds of critters.

Local attractions

Let’s start with the beaches – the Pacific coast of Costa Rica has some stunners, and several are easy to get to from Camping Sol y Luna. Playa Herradura is the nearest, a 20-minute stroll away, and a super place for safe swimming. Jacó, 10 minutes away, is a bigger resort, or there are quieter white sand beaches a 20-minute drive north at Playa Mantas and Playa Blanca. There’s action to be had on the sea as well – surfers flock here for the fab waves, and there are also centres for sport fishing, paddleboarding and snorkelling nearby. If you’re lacking the skills to stand up on water, grab a couple of surf lessons down in Jacó. Away from the seaside, it’ll take you half an hour or so to get up to the jungle of the Carara National Park in search of monkeys, sloths and macaws. Adrenaline-seekers can swing through the trees on ziplines or drive off-road vehicles, and there are crocodile-spotting boat trips to be had on the Tarcoles river.
