  • Christian park set between Wallis Lake and Seven Mile beach
  • On a strip of land a five-minute drive from Tiona and Green Point
  • Swim, fish, go paddleboarding and canoe right from the park
Can’t decide between lolling by a lake or settling in at the seaside during your next hol in New South Wales? Compromising with a stay at Camp Elim, a Christian site set on a slim strip of land in Booti Booti National Park by the banks of Wallis Lake and across the road from Seven Mile beach, is the sort of trade-off you won’t mind making. The lush green grounds here are in the Great Lakes area, with swimming, fishing, paddleboarding and canoeing to be had right from the site, along with basketball, tennis, volleyball and table tennis facilities at the park for ball-game buffs. After something more adventurous? Ask about activities organised by outdoor instructors at this site too: there’s a vertical playpen, archery and rafting for an extra fee, along with a giant swing set up every Wednesday in the summer holidays. The pamphlet wall in the main office is a fab resource for finding out about spots to stroll around in the local area too. If the sun’s bearing down on you, cool off with an ice cream or cold drink (sold daily at 3pm); you could also sort snacks in the camp kitchen and take chilled beverages out of the communal fridge before heading off on a picnic. Barbecue areas are sprinkled across the grounds, and the area around Wallis Lake is known for its excellent oysters, so pick some up locally – perhaps from the shops of Green Point and Tiona (five minutes’ drive away) – and chuck a few on the coals for a seafood supper. Please note that Camp Elim is an alcohol-, pet- and smoke-free site.

Local attractions

A trip to the Great Lakes area puts you in prime position for pottering around the rainforest, sunbathing on the beach and fishing in big bodies of water. Take a trip northwards to Forster (15 minutes’ drive) for dolphin cruises, fishing, sailboarding and scuba diving; you might catch a glimpse of humpback whales in the sea during their annual migration if you’re here between May and November. Southwards from Booti Booti National Park takes you to Pacific Palms (10 minutes) for surfing and swimming on the beaches of Elizabeth and Boomerang; inland from here, continue on to the other side of Wallis Lake for wanders to Whoota Whoota Lookout and the views out across the vast Mid North Coast. Plonk yourself down on a picnic table up at the top and admire the panoramas, all while keeping an eye out for the sea eagles that soar through the air.
