  • Small, simple and peaceful site in the Camarthenshire countryside
  • Tenby, Folly Farm and Heatherton World of Activities within 40 minutes
  • A five-minute drive from Dylan Thomas' Laugharne and Pendine beach
Feeling poetic? You’ll feel at home on this family-run site a few miles from where Dylan Thomas penned his verses. Brook House Camping is in a quiet and secluded spot with woodlands behind, open farmland in front and views stretching down to the Gower peninsula. It’s a splendid spot for wildlife watching (not for nothing is the surrounding area called Cwm Curyll, the Valley of the Hawk) and all that this cracking part of Camarthenshire has to offer. The site has toilets and hot showers as well as a washing machine and tumble dryer funded by honesty box. Shops and eats are five minutes’ drive away in Laugharne, and so are pubs; this is where Dylan Thomas did his best work, after all… Take the 10-minute Dylan’s Walk from Laugharne centre past the Writing Shed and ending up at the Boat House, where the poet spent his final years: there’s a small exhibition there, along with spectacular views over the Taf estuary and Gower peninsula and the chance to spot egrets, herons, seals and otters. A longer circular trail around the town leads up to the Norman castle, before taking you back to toast the bard’s memory at his favourite watering spot, Brown’s Hotel. If you’re not scribbling sonnets after that, you never will be…

Local attractions

Laugharne is a handy spot for joining up with the Wales Coastal Path, whose Camarthenshire sections serve up a rich spread of wetlands and salt marshes, pines and dunes. You’ll find it hard to resist the beaches as you go by, and the one at Pendine (five minutes’ drive) is a particularly special example: the wide sands on this beach stretch for seven miles, and on windy days you may feel as if you’re far out to sea. Malcolm Campbell homed in on Pendine’s natural benefits for his land speed record in 1924; learn more at the Museum of Speed. For those who want to speed around on their own, Heatherton World of Activities (30 minutes) has go-karts along with bumper boats, giant jumping pillows, high ropes and just about everything else for the thrillseeking family. Folly Farm Adventure Park and Zoo (40 minutes) is the place for fun times of a furrier kind; meet lions, rhinos and penguins, look giraffes in the eye on the high-up walkway and finish up with the traditional fairground. For contrasting calm, head out by boat from Tenby (40 minutes), for a seal spotting cruise or to visit Caldey Island, home to monks, rare birds and isolated beaches.
