Rural break in Wales on the agenda? Book in at The River’s Edge and you’ll have a restaurant on site and easy access to hiking or biking in hilly countryside 10 minutes’ drive from Monmouthshire’s foodie hub of Abergavenny. This peaceful pop-up campsite is on the edge of Bannau Brycheiniog National Park (formerly the Brecon Beacons), and 20 minutes’ walk from the scenic long-distance Offa’s Dyke Path as it passes through Pandy. Sitting right by the neatly mown pitches is the welcoming River’s Edge pub and restaurant, where you can scoff full Welsh breakfasts and lunch or dine on burgers and steaks on those days when cooking is off your agenda. You can call in for regular evening entertainment over the weekend too. Pet friendly and family run, The River’s Edge offers spacious camping fields partially shaded by trees, some with an electric hook-up, others without. Family-friendly amenities include a shower block, washing-up area and launderette, and there’s a supervised kids’ play area right next to the alfresco seating area behind the pub.

Liked: Had a lovely stay. All the staff and owners were super friendly. The pub has undergone a significant refurbishment, and it has been vastly improved since our last visit. There was some work going on around the site, as they are increasing the number of hardstandings, this didn't spoil our stay though, as we understand that they have to get this work done before the onset of winter, and it will improve the site even more. Well done everyone at the Rivers Edge, good luck for the future, and we look forward to returning in the future.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked: Quiet location, close to the town centre. Pitches were tidy and well maintained. Not a far walk to the toilet/ shower blocks. Helpful and friendly staff.

Disliked: Shower facilities could be improved as the flow of water wasn't great from the shower, and more privacy is needed for changing. There were no sockets in the shower blocks either for hairdryer etc which would have been ideal to have.

Liked: Received a warm welcome from the hosts who also ran the Pub situated on site where there was live music playing. Hot water available in the shower block and facilities were clean. Beautiful scenic location within walking distance of the popular tourist attraction ‘The Skirrid Inn’. Did not use the Wi-Fi but plenty of signal on site. Would book to visit again!

Disliked: Pitches were a little close to each other but this did not impact our stay.

Powered grass campsite

Liked: Stayed two nights, tent pitch with electric hookup. We were a bit concerned after reading the reviews but were pleasantly surprised. Yes, the pitches are in close quarters so that does make it noisy at capacity, we just stuck in headphones and listened to a podcast when our neighbours got a bit loud. If you like a spacious set up then maybe this isn't the campsite for you. We had a lovely warm welcome with instructions how to use the barrier (great for safety), where everything was and what time food was served until etc. Lovely level site, small enough that the toilets/shower block/washup we're far and we had a decent sized corner plot for our tent and car (love being able to have the car next to the tent). Showers etc were basic but did the job, in the ladies there were 3 toilet cubicles, 3 showers and two sinks so had to wait a few times as the campsite was busy. Same with the gent plus urinal. Sinks for wash up just outside. We ate at the pub on our second night - fantastic food. We had fish & chips and the burger, huge portion and just the job. Staff were wonderful, friendly and efficient. Location of site is great for walks and Abergavenny isn't far either.

Disliked: Not dislikes as such, just a few notes. The shower block would benefit from an update . The site is close to the train tracks, and the train does like honking on the way past! So its not a quiet site - which isn't a problem in itself just worth bearing in mind if that's what you're looking for.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked: Excellent site with barrier entry for security and nice flat pitches. Stayed here countless times due to its great location to nearby bikepark. Campsite amenities are as you’d expect and although it appears very busy in terms or number of tents and campers, it never feels overcrowded and you don’t have to wait to use showers etc. Less than 10 mins from Abergavenny which has a great spread of places to eat out or order takeaway if you don’t fancy cooking or you’re arriving after the pub has stopped serving food (8:30pm I think) Made even better by the welcoming staff and pub on site which serves great food - will continue to use this site for every trip - they deserve to be popular so I just hope there’s always room!

Disliked: Nothing - it’s exactly what I needed

Families can stretch their legs on the grassy common around the National Park Visitor Centre at Libanus (50 minutes’ drive), where red kites can often be spotted in the skies. Historic Hereford (half an hour) has plenty to keep everyone happy for the day, from the exquisite medieval Mappa Mundi in the Norman-era cathedral to the period oak furniture and wall hangings at the half-timbered Black and White House Museum, which dates from 1621. Learn about the region’s industrial heritage at the Waterworks Museum, and round off the trip at the Cider Museum for a guided tour and tasting session. Kids behaved nicely? Time for trekking adventures at Golden Valley Llamas (15 minutes). If the weather isn’t playing ball, make for the swimming pool and squash courts at Abergavenny Leisure Centre (10 minutes), or take toddlers to have a tootle around at the soft-play centre in Marlow’s Place (15 minutes).
