  • Wild camping farm site under a mile from Margam Country Park
  • A two-minute cycle from the country park; 15 minutes from beaches
  • Dens and swings for kids; access to a cycling trail
Set yourself up for quite the easy-breezy stay at Red Rock Wild Camping… just under a mile away from Margam Country Park, this site is well placed for outdoor activities. To add to that, there’s a real wildlife haven on site too, as it’s based on a working farm with a five-acre ancient woodland and a four-acre field. How to get to Margam’s 850-acre deer park, castle, 12th-century abbey and orangery? Well, if you’re not taking the 10-minute drive, there’s a cycling trail alongside the site that will get you to the park in under 10 minutes – once there, there are paddleboarding, mountain biking, Go Ape or canoeing activities to dive right into (once you’ve sorted your equipment and booked your slots, of course). Under the old oaks on site, there’s a natural play area of its own – kids may want to build a den or play around the swings and log steps. During the evening, there are firepits to hire, or bring your own. Logs can also be purchased on site. Don’t forget that this is a working farm, so you may spot cows, sheep and horses in the surrounding fields. There’s a stream running through the edge of the woodland. And as for facilities, there are three portable toilets in the field and two flushing toilets and a shower in a basic toilet block in the hardstanding area. A five-minute drive from the nearest M4 junction and halfway between Cardiff and Swansea, you’ll be well-connected to the big South Wales cities and any capers further out (meaning that this site is suited to a quick stop at Margam if you’re moving onto your next destination soon).

Miss Talbot camping pod

Liked: What a fantastic little place this was. A lovely little set up and the host was lovely and friendly. Very accommodating also. We had a wonderful time. The children and already asking to come back. The wasn’t any reception but personally I enjoyed that nobody could get hold of us and the children out their iPads away and enjoyed the outdoors.

Primitive cement/asphalt and grass RV campsite

Liked: Very welcoming and helpful upon arrival .. very relaxing stay suited our needs, never used any facilities as we are self sufficient other than needing some water as we couldn't figure out how to use our water pump as 1st time out in our new van for more than a night. Would recommend as lovely quiet place with all we needed

Disliked: The fact we bought 2 bags of wood and didn't get to use it because of the weather but the 2 tents next door to us felt it was appropriate to use the wood we bought to keep their fire burning without having the decency to ask so paid £10 for wood we didn't get to use .. I would have given it freely if they had asked but I don't like stealing ..its just plain wrong in my eyes buy your own wood! No need to steel

Primitive grass tent campsite (family)

Liked: Friendly welcome from the lady on the gate. There was a lot of space. Has potential to be a really nice site.

Disliked: Facilities are very poor. Only one shower for the whole site (which is quite big) The shower itself was stained and moldy and felt as though you might catch something. Porta-loos were disgusting and could be smelled from at least 20 metres away. The toilet block itself again was dirty and didn’t seem to be cleaned.

From the manager: I'm glad you left me a review anonymously....and then said who you were as it gives me the opportunity to review you. I had several complaints about you and your family's behaviour...loud and disrespectful. Throwing beer cans as high as you could into the woods leaving the site in a mess. Your camping neighbours were absolutely disgusted....so I'm really pleased to read you won't be coming again!

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Nice quiet campsite with lovely views.

Disliked: The field we camped on clearly gets boggy so the ground was pretty uneven leading to a bad nights sleep. Not all of the site was like this though.

Primitive cement/asphalt and grass RV campsite

Liked: Great site. Plenty of space and you can choose where to place your van/tent. Clean toilet block with plenty of toilet paper. Location by Margam Park is ideal and is convenient for visiting Cardiff or going to the beach at Aberavon.

Disliked: Nothing. At £12 per night why on earth would you dislike anything !

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Lovely sheltered area, and the choice to pitch where you like. Portaloos are dotted around the site and there is a toilet block, and shower block on hard standing area. This is a great way to experience wild camping, the site was very quiet and peaceful. As a solo traveller I felt very safe here. Will definitely use this site again.

Local attractions

This is a place where getting your seaside fix is easy. In fact, Porthcawl (15 minutes’ drive) has seven beaches in total, including the pink rocks of Pink Bay and the family-friendly Sandy Bay. Several are a haven for watersports, surfing and swimming, but if you want to stick to dry land, take in the atmosphere from Coney Beach (15 minutes) and its seaside funfair. More of that splendid sand and sea can be tracked down with a trek across the Merthyr Mawr Sand Dunes (20 minutes) or boating, windsurfing, jetskiing, kayaking or kitesurfing at Aberavon beach (20 minutes). Walks and cycles along the promenade are even more peaceful, of course. If you like life on two wheels, Afan Forest (20 minutes) has mountain biking or hiking trails and more cycles (or walks) can be had around Bryngarw Country Park (20 minutes) or Bwlch Mountain (35 minutes). If you’ve got kids to entertain, a great place is Wiggleys Fun Farm (10 minutes’ drive), where there’s the choice of adventure play areas and animal activities.
