  • Simple and scenic farm site in the Brecon Beacons National Park
  • A 15-minute drive from Brecon and walks up Pen y Fan
  • Dog-friendly pitches with a minimum guest age of 14
Small, simple and surrounded by stunning scenery – that’s the setup at Pwllyn Farm Camping, part of a farm in the Brecon Beacons. This spot is full of rural atmosphere but it’s handy to note that it’s only a 15-minute drive to Brecon (a journey that runs along A roads all the way). Pitches at this peaceful Powys location are small in number, well spaced and designed to make the most of the setting: they’re mown around the edges of around 20 acres of hay and wildflower meadows, with lovely views over surrounding hills and fields towards Pen y Fan. Facilities on site include five toilets, two showers, two washing-up areas, a charging point for mobile phones, a communal fridge and freezer for your icepacks. A communal cooking area and eating area with stoves and utensils is also provided. There is a cassette toilet/black waste disposal point, and all taps on the farm provide drinking water. Rubbish and recycling can be placed in the large red bin by the campers' barn. Firepits are available to hire on site for a small charge, or you are welcome to bring your own as long as they are raised off the ground and do not scorch the grass. Getting out to see more of the gorgeous surroundings is easy from here: footpaths run directly from the farm onto Mynydd Illtyd Common or up onto the nearby hills for some stunning scenery. If you’re up for stretching your legs further, there are miles of footpaths and bridleways to wander along in the area. Dogs are welcome to stay at Pwllyn Farm as long as they’re accompanied by a responsible owner; the quiet atmosphere of the site also means that it’s only suitable for guests aged 14 and over.

Primitive grass tent or RV campsite

Liked: Everything, nothing to dislike, location is amazing , opened my tent door and looked out onto Brecon Beacons, the place is rustic without been spoilt, it’s so good I’d like to keep it to myself and not tell anybody, no kids running around, no music pumping out, rabbits running about, early morning cuckoo, peacock, a lovely well kept place.

Primitive grass tent or RV campsite

Liked: Outstanding views! Nice and handy camper barn area, plenty of space.

Disliked: The only problem, but important to know about, was water. As I understood, water that is used for showers, toilets and washing up is pumped into the tank. And when there was constant use of facilities, water stopped completely. There were people left with no hot or cold water in there shower, no water to flash toilets or wash your hands. Washing up is not that essential at the moment, unless you need to pack for leaving. We went on bank holiday weekend and on Sunday, Monday mornings I have seen people leaving the shower "half washed". As for myself, I only got caught without water twice, first in the toilet, not being able to flush and wash hands and with the queue outside, which was quite embarrassing. And another time when washing dishes. This camp site is very beautiful with outstanding views and location and absolutely worth visiting, but maybe avoid weekends or bank holidays

Primitive grass tent or RV campsite

Liked: The site location was great - not too far from a main road, but felt remote enough, and with views of Pen y Fan. The site is huge, with a number of different fields to choose from - and I like that pitches are all around the edges of the fields, allowing for wildflowers to grow in the middles. The facilities are all located within the 'Campers Barn' which is really lovely - a couple of washing up areas, a handful of toilets, a couple of showers, and then there are sofas and bookshelves, a fridge, a little honest shop, and even a cooking area too. For anyone who likes stargazing, this is a great location for it! It was close to a full moon on my visit, and before moon rise I could see a lot of stars. On a night with no moon, I expect it would be spectacular. And for only £12pppn I thought this was great value for camping!

Local attractions

Being in the Brecon Beacons National Park, there are of course heaps of fabulous walking routes around. A good place to start for ideas is the visitor centre 20 minutes’ walk away, and it’s also possible to head straight out from the farm to locations like Fan Frynych mountain or Craig Cerrig-gleisiad nature reserve – both of which are about an hour and 15 minutes away on foot. Time your strolls to bring you to Mynydd Illtyd Common late in the day, as it’s often treated to some spectacular sunsets. Other popular hiking spots nearby include the fabulous Four Falls Walk (25 minutes’ drive) and Craig-y-Nos Country Park (20 minutes). You might also like to tackle a climb of Pen y Fan (15 minutes) or head to Llangorse Lake (20 minutes) for a day of watersports. For a break from all this activity, head to Brecon (15 minutes) for a tour of the cathedral and Regimental Museum of The Royal Welsh, go underground at the National Showcaves Centre for Wales (20 minutes) or take a couple of drams of Welsh whisky on a tour of Penderyn Distillery (20 minutes).
