  • Modern shepherd’s hut for two a five-minute drive from Chard, Somerset
  • Forde Abbey House 10 minutes’ drive; Lyme Regis half an hour
  • Woodburning stove and long bed; outdoor seating area with firepit
A top choice for anybody after a glamping (and possibly romantic?) retreat in the Somerset countryside, Forton House Shepherd’s Huts sits a five-minute drive from the market town of Chard, on the B3162, with a bus stop less than 100 yards away. Start your holiday with a brew – there’s plenty of complimentary tea and a cafetiere in the hut – and a look around, then congratulate yourself for choosing such modern and well-maintained accommodation. A long double bed ensures that tall guests won’t have to sleep in a fetal position or with their feet sticking out, and there’s a well-equipped fitted kitchen and an ensuite bathroom with free toiletries. Oh, and not forgetting plenty of storage. On a fine day, you might want to relax on the decked terrace with a glass of wine and a good book; as the sun goes down (and the temperature dips), you can light the firepit, or head back inside to the cosy woodburner. Your canine buddy is welcome at the site, and there are plenty of walks – through woodland and along peaceful footpaths – in the vicinity. The site is a 10-minute drive from the Blackdown Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, where you can hike among deep valleys, heathlands and hay meadows. There are also several cycling routes in the hills. Speaking of cycling, Route 33 of the National Cycle Network passes right through Chard, going along a former railway line past Chard Reservoir (where you can stop for a spot of birdwatching) and on to Ilminster.

Local attractions

A 12th-century Cistercian monastery turned private residence (and occasional film location), Forde Abbey House and Gardens (10 minutes’ drive) is well worth a visit for the Raphael-inspired Mortlake Tapestries and the enchanting formal gardens. Stroll along topiary-lined avenues, admire vibrant camellias and try not to get sprayed by the powerful Centenary Fountain. Seaton Wetlands (25 minutes) stretches alongside the River Axe and is home to wading birds and kingfishers. In addition to viewing platforms and bird hides, there is a dipping pond and an information centre where you can learn all about the reserve and its residents. Lyme Regis (half an hour) is another popular location for Hollywood films. You can recreate a dramatic scene from The French Lieutenant’s Woman on the Cobb or pretend you’re Kate Winslet as you look for ammonites on Fossil Beach. There’s also an aquarium with touch tanks, or you can go on a boat ride along the Jurassic Coast.
