  • Dog-friendly wildlife haven on a Dorset smallholding with sea views
  • A 10-minute drive from Charmouth and 15 minutes from Lyme Regis
  • Walks nearby and woods behind the site; firepits are provided
Just decided on a Jurassic Coast holiday? Whether it’s fossil hunting on the beach, wind-swept coastal hikes or exploring arty Bridport (20 minutes’ drive) you have in mind, Brig’s Farm should prove to be a splendid base. This 12-acre smallholding sitting among the gentle hills of west Dorset is a wildlife haven, with an informal, quiet atmosphere where guests are encouraged to soak up the distant sea views and the sounds of nature, well removed from loud music and rowdy parties. You can set up a firepit when the sun goes down, or gather by the wood-fired oven on pizza nights, and wait for your margherita to come out piping hot, ready to be devoured. (Book in advance, and please note that pizza nights are weather-dependent.) A coffee shack on site sells hot drinks and cakes. There are composting toilets and showers on site, so you should feel nice and fresh no matter how much walking you do in the day – and there are lots of gorgeous walks locally, plus woods behind the site that you can explore with your canine buddy, who is a very welcome guest here. Brig’s Farm is about 10 minutes by car from the coastal village of Charmouth, which is famed for its fossils. It’ll take you about an hour to get to the village on foot, and then you can reward yourself with a pint, some fish and chips and/or a paddle in the sea.

Primitive grass tent, campervan or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Local area great, good cheap wood for only £5.00 from honesty box, excellent facilities for your rubbish and recycling when you leave, place to wash dishes and bio loo. Park car next to pitch and was allowed to use Gazebo thankfully because it rained for an hour over the entire weekend. :-)

Disliked: Reviews ask for a dislike so this is the only one I could find. A nice attempt at making bio urinals, 1 was working fine but the other was blocked with leaves, a simple fix would be to put a cage or filter to trap leaves and perhaps more regular checks. Nothing else to complain about.

Primitive grass tent, campervan or trailer tent campsite

Liked: A Very natural site; orchard and countryside views. Nice facilities ( be ready for a composting toilet; I’m used to these though). Great to have the option to have a camp fire by your pitch. Only a ten min drive to charmouth beach.

Disliked: Didn’t dislike anything but be aware that to reach the site you travel along very narrow country lanes. The entrance to the farm is also quite steep and rough stone. For info: The showers cubicles are on the small side if you are a big person ( showers great though).

Primitive grass tent, campervan or trailer tent campsite

Liked: How relaxed the area was. Lots of space to choose your own pitch, first time using compost toilets went fab

Disliked: Not much. The road in scrapped us up a little nothing major. Would love a step for the toilet huts (short and disabled)

Primitive grass tent, campervan or trailer tent campsite

Liked: The relaxed but organised feel - lots of thought given to the environment and how campers could positively impact that. Useful touches like free freezing of ice packs and access to plug sockets. I loved the natural lavender spray in the toilet and shower areas.

Primitive grass tent, campervan or trailer tent campsite

Liked: EVERYTHING! First camped here about 6 or 7 years ago and I don’t remember the recycling system (which is great) but everything else is the same. Brought our 4 year old granddaughter for her first camping trip in our van and we all had a great time. It’s lovely to be able to have a fire and show her proper camping, not packed in like sardines!

Disliked: Ruts in entrance are quite deep

Primitive grass tent, campervan or trailer tent campsite

Liked: As I am a man of a certain age I had to get up in the night to use the toilet in the middle of the night. The block was a hundred metres away and it was pitch black. That visit was amazing, the site is on the top of a hill overlooking the sea with no light pollution, fortunately I was awake enough to look up and I have never seen the night sky so filled with stars. The milky way was visible and more stars than I have ever seen. Two shooting stars and an a mindless hour later I returned to my bed. A firepit at each pitch, eco friendly toileting and total peace awaits anyone wise enough to invest the trifling amount they charge. Five stars and a return forthwith for me

Disliked: The grass was too green (nothing was wrong obviously) I was just trying to match a review I read that said that they weren't warned that the tracks were dusty from another site

Local attractions

Lemurs, wallabies and meerkats are among the residents at Axe Valley Wildlife Park (10 minutes’ drive), where you can also book experiences with the animals – from supervised handling sessions to shadowing the keepers as they prepare food and clean enclosures. The Mary Anning Rocks Statue at Lyme Regis (15 minutes) honours this important 19th-century palaeontologist. You can follow in her footsteps here and go fossil hunting on the beach. Don’t worry if you fail to spot any ammonites: you can always pick one up from the local souvenir shops, or discover all about fossils and the Jurassic Coast at the Lyme Regis Museum. In addition to a long pebbly beach popular for swimming and watersports, the seaside town of Seaton (20 minutes) has a pretty marina and fishing harbour. The South West Coastal Path runs along the seafront, with a wide esplanade for waterfront strolls, or you can take a scenic ride on the vintage-style Seaton Tramway.
