The camping fields

  • Small but spacious site overlooking the Devon coast
  • Five minutes' walk from local bus service to Exeter and Bournemouth
  • Exmoor ponies, sheep, chicken and ducks on site
The clue is in the name – a holiday at Coombe View Farm will guarantee some of the best sea and countryside views east Devon has to offer. Oh, and it just so happens to be a farm too so there really is plenty to entice anyone here to pay a visit. This small but spacious site overlooks the Devonshire coast and is the perfect spot to get your fill of sea air and seriously special scenery. It has level ground and custom-made pathways for driving around, along with oodles of green grass so kids can run about and play safely. It may be rural, but you can still take advantage of the local bus service which runs between Exeter and Bournemouth (hop aboard at the stop just a five-minute walk along the lane). The campsite has no bar, no clubhouse, nor nightly entertainment, but with campfires allowed and a haven of wildlife on your doorstep (along with the handy amenities block with loos and showers, a washing-up area and disabled facilities), this is good old quiet camping in a beautiful natural setting which makes for a truly relaxing retreat. Bring on the marshmallows... Exmoor ponies, a small flock of sheep, geese and an array of chickens on site are waiting for a visit from guests. Grab your binoculars because the hedgerows and fields surrounding the site also make a convenient home for an array of winged types for you to get your beak spotting too. Wifi is available on the farm but not guaranteed because it is in a rural location without fibre.

Powered grass tent campsite (three person)

Liked: The site is beautiful, and very quiet! The facilities are basic but clean, water was plenty hot enough for showers and washing up. All dogs were kept on leads and everyone was friendly. I will definitely stay again. Loved that the site had put signs further up the road telling you to ignore the sat nav with the correct directions.

Powered grass campervan campsite (small)

Liked: View over the bay Great for star gazing Good recycling availability with bins clearly labelled.

Disliked: Entry to site requires attention. Very steep pitches, unable to get camper level even with 2 sets of chocks..

From the manager: Thank you for your review. We did make improvements to the entrance for this season, but unfortunately, heavy rains have caused it to wash out again. The good news is that we’ve already planned for further alterations next season, and we’re hopeful this will make a big difference. As for the pitches, we’ve found that most campers are able to level themselves out without issue, but we completely understand that it can be tricky at times. If you were having trouble, we would have been more than happy to assist you. Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you need help during future visits.

Powered grass tent or trailer tent campsite (large)

Liked: Nice location

Disliked: The site is basic, you can see the sea, a couple of cows and ponies in the distance. Toilets and shower blocks are dated but clean Prepare yourself for the owners. An elderly man drives round in his car every 10 minutes checking on people and asking what you are doing Another man along with a purple haired lady drives round on a gator, checking on people and what I can only describe as verbally abusing people The man on the gator provided us with some verbal abuse around our fire pit being on bricks (they did ask us to put them on bricks). This was comical. What I didn’t find pleasant was when the man swore several times at my child for touching his fence. If you are after a basic campsite, many rules, constantly being checked on and a good measure of verbal abuse, adults and children are fair game - book this campsite you won’t be disappointed

Primitive grass RV campsite

Liked: Nice country views Plenty of facilities Lots of green space for the kids to run around Friendly owner& staff

Disliked: The footpath path down to the beach through countryside was not open so it was a walk along the road

From the manager: Thank you for your review. We understand that the locked gate might have been an inconvenience during your stay. Unfortunately, due to past incidents where the gate was left open, which resulted in livestock escaping onto the roads and campsite, we've had to keep it locked for safety reasons. However, we’re always happy to assist – if you had asked, we would have gladly opened the gate for you and ensured you could access it on your return. It’s worth noting that this pathway only leads partway down the hill and doesn’t directly reach the beach, but we would have been happy to suggest the best route. We hope you had a great time and look forward to welcoming you back in the future.

Liked: The site is nice and very well kept(Grass). You can see animals on the fields in the distance. Showers were not to bad, always warm with plenty of power

Disliked: Getting on and off site is terrible.the biggest dip I have ever seen.it needs a ton on chipping atleast to fill it in. Sinks for washing up fine but not under cover.toilets on arrival were cleanish few things on the floor.they were not cleaned in the 4 days we were there (still same stuff on floor).we found the pitches to be quite small. There was an issue with our kids playing with other children and 1 of them touched the plastic ribbon fence. The guy who was cutting the grass swore at the kids. They all do drive up and down several times a day and can stare at you.we found the owner (now retired) a nice guy. We only seen the lady 1 time.but the other guy was not very approachable. We found him abit rude and intimidating. Always going on about the grass and don't burn it.everywhere you look are scorch marks.wouldnt stay again and would not recommend. We were made aware of people leaving early because of issues with the staff

From the manager: Thank you for your review. Thank you for bringing this to our attention. This is not something we were aware of during your stay, but we have since spoken with our staff to ensure everyone is vigilant in maintaining a family-friendly environment. If this had been reported to reception at the time, we would have address the situation. Regarding the tape, it is used to clearly separate different areas of the site to maintain order and safety for all guests.

Primitive grass tent campsite (three person)

Liked: Warm welcome and a clean and tidy site. Facilities were good and always clean, with no queues!

Disliked: Why are the tents always asked to pitch so far from the facilities when the camper vans and caravans with their indoor facilities park so near??

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for your review. The current setup is due to the location of our electric hook-ups and the fact that the ground near the facilities is better suited for levelling caravans and camper vans. We hope you enjoyed your stay.

Powered grass travel trailer campsite

Liked: Campsite itself was lovely & peaceful!

Disliked: Ground very hard (under the lovely looking grass…) ..couldn’t even put the dog pole in properly, the amenities very poor, not clean (just a container/outdoor cabin for toilets) shower cubicle not very appealing to use either! Entrance to site extremely unsuitable for your car /caravan (a big ditch that could easily be smoothed out with a few bags of concrete) caused damage to my daughters van & car. The site would be lovely if they had a shop or a breakfast van selling artisan breads/baps etc or even a chip/fish/burgervan the odd evening Also the older gentleman (presumably owner) isn’t exactly people friendly …no customer service skills, not friendly & quite rude (especially if you’re a dog owner)

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for your review. We understand that the ground conditions can be a bit challenging, but unfortunately, that’s the nature of the terrain here once you get past the topsoil. As for the entrance, we did make improvements for this season, but heavy rains have caused it to wash out again. We’ve already scheduled further alterations for next season, and we’re hopeful this will resolve the issue. For future reference, there are a few shops located about 2.5 miles away that offer basic supplies, and if you’re looking for breakfast, there are also some lovely cafés in Branscombe, just 1.25 miles from the site. We also have take away pamphlets located in the reception.

Local attractions

Branch out to the village of Branscombe with its pretty beach, just one and half miles from the campsite. Thatched cottages, a working Norman forge and Saint Winifred church make a day out in Branscombe a mightily interesting one. If you’re after a trusty ale or a plentiful helping of hearty pub grub after a day meandering through the scenic village and brushing up on your Devonshire history, then good news - Branscome is sandwiched between two pubs serving the like. The well-looked after Jurassic Coast shingle beach has rockpools for kids to dive into exploring. With fishing trips available, a picnic area and a café serving ice creams on the beachfront too, all in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, everyone’s sure to have a splashing time… Step out on a coastal walk along the footpaths from Branscombe to the fishing village at Beer, just two miles away and with fresh fish available to buy on the sheltered beach to take back for the campfire too. There’s a unmissable all-day brekkie to be had at one of the village’s popular cafés, perfect for prepping you for a guided tour around this history-rich smuggling haven. Can’t decide where to start? Choo-choose a trip to the model railway attraction, Pecorama, to keep the kids entertained with gardens, games and train rides. For a more demanding stroll, around seven miles westward you’ll reach the resort of Sidmouth. If you can drag yourself from a deckchair on the pebbly beach, take a peek at the town’s church with its stained-glass window donated by Queen Victoria herself - it’s a royally pretty sight. While you’re up, climb the 500-foot Peak Hill to enjoy a panorama of the area too - one won’t be disappointed with the view. Music lovers - take a trip in August to have yourselves a merry time at the town’s folk festival. You’re never short of a coastline to explore around here: other seaside towns close by include Seaton (an hour’s walk or 10-minute car journey), home to the Axe Yacht Club. Hop aboard the tram here to take in the views of the estuary - twitchers, don’t forget your binos. Exeter is also just 45 minutes by car to the east. The popular university and cathedral city is home to shopping and dining galore, as well as indoor climbing and bowling centres (perfect for rainy days) and a street food market, cycling and canoeing opportunities (for the sunnier ones). A trip to these parts wouldn’t be complete without a scoop (or few) of Devonshire clotted cream dolloped on a fruit-strewn scone, and with the choice of restaurants and eateries in Exeter, you’re sure to be able to trial and test some of the best.
