  • Laidback Devon family site with adventure activities available
  • A five-minute drive to Westward Ho! beach; 15 minutes to Barnstaple
  • 35-acre site within walking distance of pub and Big Sheep theme park
Adventure Camping is a spacious site in the grounds of the Inspiring Learning North Devon Centre, a mile and a half from the centre of Bideford and in the scenic surrounds of comely Devon countryside (with views both up to the hills and over to the coast). This is a splendid spot to settle in for lots of Devon hotspots: you can walk to the Big Sheep theme park (or stroll to the local pub, five minutes away…) and a short drive gets you to places like Westward Ho! beach or to Barnstaple to hit the Tarka Trail. And of course you'll want to allocate some time to the fab range of antics organised by the site: a number of different adventure activities will be available to book during your stay, including climbing, high ropes, an assault course, kayaking and paddleboarding (please use the requests section on your booking if you'd like to enquire in advance about these). There’s a whopping 35 acres of space to play with here, so plenty of scope to play games, take strolls around the lake or light up a barbecue or firepit to chat with pals. Dogs are welcome on site so feel free to bring them along for your Devon break here.

Powered grass travel trailer campsite

Liked: Toilet/shower facilities were very clean and clean daily. Walking distance to the big sheep which was enjoyable. High ropes activity was good and my daughter enjoyed it but they said that I had to go on with her so had to pay extra to go on myself even though when we did it there were other small children on their own.

Disliked: Poor communication. When we booked through Pitchup we were told pitch time of 12pm. Then the email that came through from Adventure camping stated 1pm which was not an issue. Nearer the time of booking we received another email with details and stating the pitch time of 3pm! All a little confusing so emailed Adventure camping and they stated we could pitchup at 12pm and they would investigate with pitchup. Shop opening times were stated on a leaflet when we arrived for 10am-4pm. When we went there at 10am there was a sign outside stating opening times of 11am-2.30pm and 4.30pm-6pm. One of the days we went there at 5pm to find it closed. We asked at reception and they stated that it was closed this afternoon! When we find the shop open, we were a little disappointed by it. Seemed to be a gift shop which sold crisps, drinks and sweets. Was expecting more convenience items and thought they would have done well to cater for campers by selling some fresh produce. We ran out of washing up liquid and were hoping to pick some up but they didn't sell it unfortunately and were unable to get to another shop to purchase so had to borrow from another camper. Communication with the activities was a little poor. We booked our activity 2 days in advance at reception. Come the day we assumed that we would meet at the activity so made our way to the high ropes. The receptionist came out to advise us that we needed to meet at the cafe so we had to go back to the cafe to wait. We met the instructors and were escorted back to the high ropes. We enjoyed the high ropes, although the instructors did not appear very engaged. We started on the low ropes to see how my daughter got on. They asked if she wanted to do them again but she wanted to go on the high course so we went up to the higher ones and did these twice. She then wanted to go back to the low ropes but when I asked about this the instructor told me we could'nt as there were only 2 of them doing it today. This was despite having half an hour of time left for the activity and when we booked we were told that we would have 2 hours doing whichever ones we wanted to.

Powered grass tent campsite (large)

Liked: The activities - cleanliness - Nice site with great activities which I should add that I don't think the website does justice to, particularly the assult course. It was fantastic much bigger than it looked on the website and more difficult than it looked on the website. We had an electric grass pitch. The space was huge, the ground was difficult to get pegs in places due to the rocks/stones buy wasn't overly problematic The showers were always clean ( great work to the housekeeping team ) the showers were powerful enough and always hot sometimes a little too much for my son but fine for me the toilets again mainly always clean both the facilities are up a little hill roughly 2 minutes walk from our pitch number 3 - I think doors even ¾ height doors to the toilets or showers would have been far better. Overall a very good site. Quite commercial as they cater for schools etc and I'd say this was more of an activity centre with camping on the side

Disliked: The shower blocks toilet blocks not having any kind of door/barrier as you go in

Liked: calmly

Disliked: There is no hot water in the sink. The hot water in the showers is not stable. There is a general light switch at the entrance. I was in the shower and someone turned off the light.

Route directions

By bus The only bus which passes The Ultimate Adventure Centre is the 319 Stagecoach bus from Barnstaple town centre to Hartland. The nearest bus stop is outside the church in Abbotsham, which is approximately 2- 3 minutes' walk from the site. However, if you ask the driver nicely, they usually stop outside the car park to drop you off. By train The nearest train station is Barnstaple, approximately 10 miles away. From here, a taxi will cost around £20, or you can take the 319 bus which stops outside of the train station (details above).

Local attractions

Adventure Camping is in the small village of Abbotsham, niftily placed for the best of Devon attractions and the nearby beaches of day trips to Croyde, Woolacombe, Westward Ho! and other Devon beaches. Less than half an hour's drive will see you at Saunton Sands, the eminently suitable surfing beach, and Braunton Burrows, the eminently spectacular sand dune system that's the biggest in England. Botany and nature buffs will find over 400 species of vascular plants and several rare species here; take a guided walk for the easiest way to spot. Closer to home, on the edge of the Taw Torridge Estuary and in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Northam Burrows Country Park is a smaller but still very viewsome option for nature walks among its sand dunes, salt marsh and grassland. Access it from the beach at Westward Ho! and drop in at the visitor centre at the northern end of the beach, open to the public in summer. Heavenly hikes on the South West Coast Path are just a mile away, and nearby Bideford has two of Devon's toppest attractions for kids and families, the Milky Way Adventure Park and The Big Sheep. See also the fishing village of Clovelly along the coast to the south west, a day out among the greenery of RHS Rosemoor, another among the waves of surfing spot Woolacombe, or a drive to Dartmoor for yet more outdoorsy activities: you're on an adventure, after all…
