  • Luxury pods at a family farm in the western Lake District
  • A 15-minute drive to Seascale beach; half an hour to Scafell Pike
  • Ensuite shower room, mini kitchen and barbecue/firepit for each pod
It’s very much a family affair at Strudda Bank Pod Paddock – there are three generations of the same family now living and working at this traditional hill beef and sheep farm on the western edge of the Lake District. A quick look at the map and pictures will give you a clue as to why they’re all so content in this location, and why they’re keen to share it with guests. The farm is close to Ennerdale, which is one of the Lake District’s wilder and less visited areas, and it’s also only about 15 minutes’ drive from the beach at Seascale. Popular spots like Wast Water and Scafell Pike can be reached with a drive of half an hour or so, but you’ll also be able to seek out much quieter areas close to the farm. Staying here is a thoroughly rural experience – you’ll have gorgeous views over the Calder Valley and your neighbours will be the 100 cows and 1000 hill sheep that live on the farm. The accommodation is far from rustic though: these are luxuriously appointed wooden pods, each with comfy beds (a double, a bunk bed and a small double sofa bed), underfloor heating, an ensuite shower room and a mini kitchen (with hob, microwave, fridge, toaster and kettle). To make life nice and easy, lots of extras are provided here, including all bedding and towels, plus all crockery, utensils and other kitchen kit. You’ll have a dining table and chairs for indoor meals, along with a firepit/barbecue and picnic beach out on the deck for alfresco evenings.

Swaledale Shelter camping pod

Liked: We had such a lovely time. The pod is cosy and comfortable and in a picturesque and peaceful setting. We were given a tour of the farm and got to meet their friendly prize sheep and even stroke an emu. We're hoping to return. My daughter loved the playground.

Herdwick Hideaway camping pod

Liked: The pods were amazing. Well equipped clean and modern. Perfect outdoor area for bbqs. Also liked we could use the communal cabin on site.

Disliked: Would have preferred the decongest area to have a gate so the dogs couldn’t get out.

Herdwick Hideaway camping pod

Liked: Had a fantastic stay at Strudda Bank Farm Glamping pods, the location is wonderful and the pods are brilliant! The owners really have thought of everything you could possibly need for a fantastic stay. Loved meeting the owners of the site and having the opportunity to feed the emu's and collect hens eggs. Also really enjoyed a couple of local walks.

Swaledale Shelter camping pod

Liked: Gorgeous pod with absolutely everything you need. Brilliant play area for the kids and was lovely to let them roam free and safe on the site. Pod was spotlessly clean and comfortable. Farmer kev showed us the emus and hens and even gave us some eggs for breakfast in the morning ! We had a slight issue with the toilet but text Vicky who had sorted it by the time we came back from a trip out . Thank you so much for a lovely stay x

Disliked: Bit of a drive to the nearest shop but our intention was to be remote and enjoy the countryside and that’s what we did :)

Swaledale Shelter camping pod

Liked: Peace and quiet at the pod was brilliant, the extra investment in underfloor heating and little creature comforts like a full set of pots and pans is a really nice touch. I'd really recommend this place to people looking for a quiet spot away from the noise.

Local attractions

You can start exploring the Lake District right from the farm gates – walking trails take you out for riverside strolls or walks through the Calder Valley’s ancient oak woods. Calder Abbey and Monks Bridge packhorse bridge are among the historic structures you might find as you wander. Elsewhere in the Lake District, explore its deepest lake, Wast Water and its highest peak, Scafell Pike (both half an hour’s drive). For other ways to explore, there’s a horse riding centre 15 minutes’ drive away or you could take a ride on the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway (known locally as La’al Ratty) 20 minutes away. For a change of scenery, head to the coast for a day at Seascale beach (15 minutes’ drive) or try St Bees (20 minutes) where you can walk to the top of St Bees Head before cooling off with an ice cream on the beach. Muncaster Castle (20 minutes) and Whitehaven’s harbour and Rum Story (25 minutes) are worth a trip too.
