  • Dog-friendly wildlife haven in the peaceful Cambridgeshire Fens
  • A 20-minute drive from Ely; 45 minutes from Thetford Forest Park
  • Lakes for fishing on site; safe campfire facilities; barbecues allowed
From rumbling rivers and towering pines to historic cathedral towns… find yourself smack bang in the peaceful Cambridgeshire Fens at Head Fen Caravan and Camping. Whether you’re raring for adventure in the outdoors or you’d prefer a little downtime beside the on-site lake, this dog-friendly site has spacious pitches (backed by pretty cool fishing lakes), 20 minutes’ drive from Ely’s historic sites and 45 minutes from the treetop ropes courses and the crisscross of cycling and walking trails at Thetford Forest Park. You may already be a talented angler but even if you aren’t, practise and perfect your fishing skills in the lakes on site. As you’re surrounded by the Fens, it’s also likely you’ll be itching to get out on foot. And happily, your dog won’t have to miss out on the trails, as you can bring up to two dogs along. Things are kept pretty simple on site with showers, toilets and indoor/outdoor sink facilities, plus a washing machine and tumble dryer available at a small cost in case your clothes need a bit of TLC. Barbecues and campfires are both permitted on site, so get ready your favourite recipes and source the ingredients from the shops 15 minutes’ drive in Littleport (there's a riverside pub and several restaurants here too, where you can sip on a drink near to the water).

Primitive grass and earth tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: The kitchen shed was very well equipped and clean. The shower room was also good but when we stayed there were only two other parties and so if busy expect a long wait to use it as there was just the one. Pitch size was ok.

Powered grass and earth campsite

Liked: Pretty Fenland setting with good views of the fields and customary big skies. Plenty of toilets, showers and wash facilities at both ends of the site. The site is well kept and we loved waking our dog around the lakes. A perfect place if you like camping and fishing.

Disliked: My fault but we scorched the grass near the pitch with our raised BBQ. I don’t think I put sufficient protection down. Please let me know if there’s a charge.

Liked: Great Site. Located in the middle of nowhere, so take supplies with you! Facilities were clean and tidy. Site was empty apart from us and a caravan. Large site, well laid out. Would stay again!

Powered grass and earth campsite

Liked: Great peaceful site. Easy to find. Fishing was brilliant and really close to the site.

Disliked: Amenities could do with some work. All of the showers leaked/didn’t drain properly. The passcode/key lock system needs some work, my daughter got locked in as there was no key to unlock, it was already unlocked then she went to use the toilet. Int he mean time someone else and out who had the key and locked up.

Powered grass and earth campsite

Liked: The fishing lakes were great. Views over the fields at sunset were oovwly

Disliked: Only 1 washing up facility at the other end of the camp site, shower and toilet area were a bit run down. And the site was very open to the elements. It was very windy when we stayed and quite unpleasant

Powered grass and earth campsite

Liked: Had a lovely stay at Head Fen, feels like you are in the middle of nowhere but a 10 min drive to the nearest supermarket and close to so many lovely towns a short drive away. Ideal for us, well organised, great facilities (fridge, freezer, indoor washing up area, washing machines). Beautiful area, very peaceful and lots to explore nearby.

Disliked: Nothing massively stands out as negative. A few dogs were off lead and a little disruptive but this is no fault of site management.
