  • Family-run site on a working farm in Northamptonshire
  • Castles, stately homes and woodland walks all within a 20-minute drive
  • Farm shop and café selling local produce; 10 minutes' walk from a pub
Find fab nosh and forest walks on this family-run working farm site in Northamptonshire: New Lodge Farm Caravan and Camping Site is a peaceful and spacious spot in the Rockingham Forest, a once-vast wooded area that was William the Conqueror’s favourite hunting ground. Whatever you’re chasing, the mix of medieval castles, market towns and ancient woodlands teeming with wildlife makes for rich pickings… Surrounded by fields, with the skies visited by a large resident population of red kites, you’ll feel right out in nature here. Dogs are welcome as well, and there’s a one-acre walking area set aside, taking you and canine companions down to the duck ponds. The farm shop and café are bursting with local produce to relish or to pack as picnics on your rambles round the area. Barbecues are allowed and there’s a mighty good selection of farm-fresh lamb, beef and pork for you to buy at the shop. For more supplies, it’s a 10-minute walk into Bulwick, where there’s a village store selling basics and a cracking good pub with hot food. Preserving a strong sense of the past, the team at New Lodge Farm Caravan and Camping Site have converted the old Victorian milking parlour into a block containing bright and roomy washrooms with showers, a laundry and a washing-up area.

Camping pod

Liked: This was our best ever quiet getaway together. After many years being Mum & Dad, Grandma and Grandad and Foster carers, we had the opportunity to enjoy a peaceful restful time away from everything. The site is immaculate and welcoming. All the staff were friendly, professional and easy to relate to. Staff couldn't do enough for their visitors it seemed. Everyone was smiling. The wardens were very welcoming and helped us with our motorbike parking and introduced us to the pod we were staying in. They were always available and always interested in the needs of their guests. The, "luxury" pod we stayed in was so comfortable and clean that we really didn't want to leave. The pods and shepherds hut are set slightly away from the rest of the campsite with a narrow gravel path leading to their secluded, private part of the field. In the evening crows busied themselves in the trees as they decided where to roost for the night and cows moo in the distant field (all very romantic). But once the pod door is closed, those sounds disappear. Spot lights illuminate the woodland and grass in-front of the pods to make it look great as you burn a bit of wood in the evening in the provided wood-burning basket. The sink and shower water temperature is fully adjustable and the WiFi ran our phones and we were able to watch Netflix on out tablet. The en-suit shower, toilet and sink fit perfectly into the size of the camping pod and the bed was very comfortable. The glass door to the en-suit is one-way reflective glass so doubles as a full length mirror when getting dressed. All the provided cups, plates, cutlery etc were clean and fresh. Nothing tatty or used looking. The restaurant and shop feel more like relaxing therapy and make you want to sit back into one of their comfy arm chairs, sip coffee all day and watch the world go bye. There's even an old free-to-play table-top space invaders game for guests to use. It's a great place to relax while eating, waiting for meals to be prepared or while having a slice of cake and a pint. Plenty of very tasty hand prepared foods and drink to order with hardly a moment before used cups, plates and cutlery are whisked away and tables cleaned. Pizza night was a treat. Hand made and remarkably tasty. We love children but this is an adult only site. We're all parents and grandparents so we've served our time and need to unwind and rest. This is the place to do it without doubt. Children wouldn't enjoy sitting quietly looking at the trees and doing nothing anyway. We would absolutely go back to New Lodge Farm and do it all again and would recommend this to people who want restful peace and quiet with comfortable surroundings and perfect hosts.

Disliked: I have nothing to add here. There was nothing to dislike at all.

Liked: Travelling as a couple in our 30’s. This was by far the best campsite we have stayed at since we started camping a couple of years ago. The site is impressive and immaculately clean. The staff are very friendly and helpful. The site its self is lovely with fantastic facilities that are kept super clean at all times. There is nothing this site has forgotten from the big things to the quirky little things that make all the difference. The farm shop/restaurant on site is gorgeous, the Saturday night pizza service was fab and we also booked in for the Sunday lunch which meant you could stroll back to your pitch and relax for the afternoon! The fruit and veg man was there all weekend he sold high quality fresh produce, plants and flowers a lovely touch the strawberries were the best we’ve ever had! We would 100% stay here again and would recommend to others without a doubt! Thanks for a great stay :-)

Powered grass tent campsite

Liked: Site was great, excellent facilities, well maintained grass area, had electric hook up. Hosts were very friendly and helpful and the site is eco friendly, they clearly care about the environment. On-site cafe is good, we had Sunday Lunch and a breakfast.

Disliked: The noise from the A43 is loud, especially camping as you can’t shut doors and windows. The camping field is nearest to the road which is unfortunate and disturbed our sleep. I would recommend relocating the camping pitches.

Local attractions

One of England’s smaller counties, Northamptonshire packs a lot in to a small area, and it’s particularly well supplied with historic dwellings. The richly decorated but roofless Kirby Hall, the half-finished Elizabethan manor surrounded by wildflower meadows at Lyvden New Bield and the sturdy grandeur of 900-year-old Rockingham Castle can all be explored within a 20-minute drive. If walks and wildlife are your thing, you’ll be similarly well sorted: make for Fermyn Wood Country Park (15 minutes) to see what the whole Rockingham Forest area must once have looked like, taking circular trails to spot badgers and fallow deer. A similar distance away, Bedford Purlieus National Nature Reserve buzzes with bird and insect life, among the remains of Roman and medieval quarries and smelting houses. A 20-minute drive away, the nature reserve at Rutland Water is paired with a massive outdoor leisure area for swimming, walking, sailing, fishing and windsurfing. If you’re more into petrol power, it’s 15 minutes to Rockingham Speedway for regular race meets, track experiences and vintage rallies. Heading further out (in every way), it's 50 minutes from the site to the National Space Centre in Leicester. While you're there, take in the King Richard III Visitor Centre and pay your respects to the last Plantagenet king, who now rests in the cathedral, and make time for a mooch round the 700-year-old market.
