Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Fantastic views, plenty of space in field, Ed the farmer friendly and helpful and knowledgeable of the area. The site is peaceful and ideally located for some lovely walks or short drives (2-5 miles) to beauty spots and local villages. Shower and toilet blocks clean, fire pits and wood available. Rustic camping and great to get back to basics. Sat nav doesn’t quite recognise location so just call the number on the booking and he’ll set you straight or ask in the pub(red lion) at the bottom of the road

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Peaceful farm with the simple things required and needed for a short/medium stay, it was my sons first proper camping night out and he loved the fact we could get a small fire pit and wood which allowed us to have toasted marshmallows, farmer is very polite and helps with whatever you need. We will be coming back next spring.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Owner was very welcoming and talked us through the site and where to pitch. The views are absolutely stunning. We brought our own but you could hire a fire pit and buy wood on site. 5G which is a nice bonus. Great for a night and close proximity to Dovedale/Ashbourne.

Disliked: As others have noted, toilets on a busy weekend needed an extra clean and soap topping up. To be expected as it’s a hillside campsite, but some of the pitches are a little sloped. Fine for a night and worth it for the insane views but be prepared! Worth arriving earlier in the afternoon to ensure a decent pitch as it’s pick your own.

Primitive mixed campervan campsite

Liked: Great scenery / views of the surrounding countryside. Lots of public footpaths around, one from the site to the Red Lion in Kniveton. Friendly farmer ( owner) Unfortunately just not for us.

Disliked: Facilities not for us, and price steep for toilet, washing facilities! 2 old toilets in tatty portacabin for ladies. 2 showers, hot water but not enough when site is busy. Mens 4 x portaloos- smelly, dirty nappy in one. Outside cold water sink for pots Drive down not well maintained.

Primitive mixed campervan campsite

Liked: Relaxed nature. Fire pit. We were also lent a big outdoor connect 4 game and a trivet for the fire. They were very flexible on how we laid out our 3 tents. We were a small group of 4 ladies and 1 child. Showers were hot and powerful. Good suggestions on local area

Disliked: Very windy exposed. Still sloping pitches despite the site being tiered into the hillside.

Primitive mixed campervan campsite

Liked: Sehr schön gelegener Campingplatz, sehr nette Stimmung, sehr freundlicher Empfang!

Disliked: Sanitäreinrichtungen, v. a. für Männer (Toiletten) könnten besser sein. Unser Stellplatz war etwas schief.

Local attractions

Historic towns? Terrific trails? Prehistoric sites? Absolutely. For the former, work a visit to the market town of Ashbourne (10 minutes’ drive) or the spa village of Matlock Bath (20 minutes) into your itinerary. For the latter, Hob Hurst's House (40 minutes) is a prehistoric burial mound – and just another addition to a long list of historical spots across the Peak District, including the Nine Ladies Stone Circle (half an hour), Arbor Low Stone Circle and Gib Hill Barrow (25 minutes), Tissington Hall (15 minutes), Kedleston Hall (25 minutes) and the Crich Tramway Village (half an hour). When it comes to trails, there’s a very splendid selection about. Perhaps a 13-mile cycle on the Tissington Trail (10 minutes) beginning in Ashbourne? The limestone gorge and country park at the Heights of Abraham (20 minutes)? The Dovedale (25 minutes) river walk to the Stepping Stones and the Thorpe Cloud? For those who like a paddle or a cycle, Carsington Water (15 minutes) is an attractive candidate. Family-friendly days are bound to be packed with activities there, and the same goes for the family-friendly theme park Gulliver's Kingdom (20 minutes).
