  • Peaceful park near the Peak District
  • Easy access to Derby and Nottingham; two pubs five minutes' walk away
  • New toilet and shower block kept to immaculate standards
What a peaceful park this is for Peak District hols – on 11 acres of quiet woodland near the national park and set deep in the Derbyshire countryside with picnic areas peppered all around. And what a pleasing park this is for those who insist on amenities being immaculate and up to date – the toilet and shower block comes with disabled access, baby changing and showers with hot and cold water, and is kept in tiptop condition at all times by the friendly site team. Riddings Wood Holiday Park is a rural park but with easy access to urban centres like Derby and Nottingham as well as to the hikes, bike rides and canters of the Peak District. (If you're a bit bamboozled as to what to do first, have a look at the tourist info point in reception or ask the team for tips.) Campfires are allowed if you need a bit of warming upon return. And finally, what a pint-friendly site Riddings Wood is too – the only thatched-roof pub in Derbyshire, Moulders Arms (aka The Thack), is a short stroll away; and the Seven Stars, a community pub, is just across the road. Cheers…

FHU cement/asphalt and grass travel trailer campsite

Liked: Location was excellent, we were on a flat, fully serviced pitch, there were alot of slopping pitches. Yoilets and showers were clean and hot. The 2 pubs you walk to are lovely. No food, but you can order in and the pubs supply plates & cutlery, lots of choice of takeaways.

Disliked: Showers needed a a chair or something in side to put stuff on, also more hooks on the back of door. Also, something to clean showers after use. The showers don't seem to drain quick enough, water can reach door. Need recycling bins

FHU cement/asphalt and grass travel trailer campsite

Liked: General location was nice. New Toilet block was ok. Strong TV signal.

Disliked: Serviced Pitches are small. Charged for dog but no dog bins or dog walks on site. No access to Ridding’s wood either unless you leave site. Only one disgusting small elsan point with poor flush. Grey waste drain on pitch hidden by overgrown grass and weeds. Roads have dangerous potholes.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: It was quiet, clean, the man on reception was lovely and the park was great for the kids.

Disliked: Nothing against the park at all just the idiots who turned up late making a racket and then decided to beep there horn, slam car doors and dismantle there tent in the middle of the night and wake the kids up

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Kids loved the park and the big field to play on. There is also a lovely walk in the back woods where we came across some farm animals.

Disliked: The walk from the field to the toilets is a bit much for the kiddies but not too much of an issue.

Powered cement/asphalt and grass travel trailer campsite

Liked: The views, the showers, the staff

Disliked: On arrival I was greeted by a young gentleman at reception who was warm and welcoming.. The views from the pitch are stunning, each pitch would be bigger for far larger vehicles than my camper van.. The camp looks clean and well cared for and I was given some excellent directions by the groundsman for a walk to the nearby reservoir (2 miles)... The showers and toilets are pristine clean and smelled wonderful , the water piping hot and powerful in the shower.. I felt very safe here as a solo female traveller A peaceful haven I shall return to I didn't use the WiFi in the end as it was very slow I think the hardstanding needs redoing as its quite uneven

Local attractions

To the Peak! The Peak District National Park is but a short drive from Riddings Wood Holiday Park, and has a bit of what you fancy for all ages and inclinations. If you're in the area to hike, there are more Peak District trails than you can shake a (walking) stick at, from the shorter treks of seven or so miles around the upper Dove Valley and Pilsbury Castle, to long-distance paths like the Limestone Way (46 miles), the Derwent Valley Heritage Way (55 miles) or the Peak District parts of the Pennine Way, running for 268 miles from the northern Peak District to just inside the Scottish border. Climbers and cavers also delve into all things Peak: thousands of routes for all abilities are all over the park for climbers, including Burcen Edge for beginners and more hair-raising ascents like Debauchery and Mad Dogs and Englishmen for the severely experienced. If you're of a cavernous disposition, make your way to the village of Castleton and its four show caves, Blue John, the Peak, Treak Cliff and Speedwell Cavern with underground boat trip. Matlock Bath has a cable car to take adventurers to limestone caverns The Heights of Abraham, and Poole's Cavern near Buxton has vast caves to explore before an above-surface walk around Buxton Country Park. Other attractions like Chatsworth House and Gardens and the old Crich Tramway are to hand for the historically-minded, alongside old Peak District villages and market towns for tearooms, restaurants, family pubs and lots of shopping: try Buxton, Ashbourne and Bakewell to start you off. Back at Matlock Bath, let the kids go large at the rides and attractions of theme and play park Gullivers Kingdom for ages two to 13; the 600-acre Matlock Farm Park nearby should keep them busy for a bit too.
