How spectacular are these surrounds? And things are even better if you've got the offspring with you, as Eastern Norway's Birkelund Camping has loads to keep busy – think playground, sandpit, trampoline and space aplenty – while you sink into the more grownuply pursuits on site like steaming in the (free) sauna. Activities for all sizes are simply sorted from here: Birkelund Camping is in the area surrounding the mountain village of Hovet, in a land of traditional mountain farming and outdoor activities: you must have a go at the hiking and cycling around here... A fishing pond and a lake are both within half a kilometre of the site; climbing is nearby, and winter sports are available at Hovet and Hol three kilometres away. There are loads of facilities for all ages on site, including a volleyball and badminton court, table tennis, a pétanque court and a playground with swings, slide and sandpit. There's also a small outdoor pool, set like the rest of the site among green and splendid mountain views. The two amenities buildings are heated: one has ladies' and gents' showers, toilets and sinks, and the other has toilets, shower cubicles and a nursing room, along with a guest kitchen with benches, crockery, a microwave, two dishwashers and a washing machine and tumble dryer. Also on site is a kiosk with water point, a worktop for cleaning vegetables and fish, and a communal firepit area with table and benches.

Local attractions

Birkelund Camping is well placed for outdoor activities including rock climbing, mountain biking and fishing. Popular options with guests include fishing the abundant stock in the Storåni river, and having family days at the pool and play facilities of Hallingskarvet Fjellbad. You could also borrow a bike gratis from the Birkeland Camping team to pedal off exploring, or potter a short distance by foot to the nature reserve, reservoir and wetland of Hovsfjorden lake. Hovet, Hol, Sudndalen, Geilo, Hemsedal and Gol are all within driving distance for winter sports. Illuminated and non-illuminated cross country trails are in Hovet under 10 minutes' drive away; Hol (40 minutes) has the Dagali Skisenter resort with one of the longest sled-racing hills in the land, and Sudndalen (15 minutes), Geilo (20 minutes), Ål (30 minutes) and Gol (40 minutes) all have ski slopes and cross country trails.
