  • Spacious grass pitches by the Reitdiep river near Warfhuizen
  • Wadden Sea coast and Lauwersmeer National Park 15 minutes' drive
  • River access for fishing and swimming; paddleboards or boats to hire
It’s all about the relaxed riverside setting at Camping Reitdiep, where spacious grass pitches sit on the banks of the Reitdiep river a couple of kilometres from the village of Warfhuizen. Settling down by a river often has something of a calming effect – and so it’s likely to prove here, as it’s a peaceful place with pretty views. And if you’re not content with simply looking at the water, that’s fine too – there’s access to the river for swimming, fishing, paddleboarding and canoeing or sailing (there are paddleboards and small boats to rent on site). Back on dry land, there are also lots of places to get out for a bike ride along the area’s cycle paths, or you can take a walk on the northern stretch of the Pieterpad long-distance path. The coastal landscapes of the Lauwersmeer National Park and Wadden Sea are about 15 minutes’ drive away too – and the lovely little city of Groningen is 25 minutes away. However you fill your days, you’ll be coming back to spacious pitches surrounded by greenery, where you can spend the evening by a campfire or barbecue if you wish. A fridge and freezer are available to store your food and drinks, and there’s also a self-service pantry where you can make tea and coffee. Alternatively, you might like to order something to eat from the resident chef (who cooks in the outdoor kitchen from Thursday to Sunday). For further entertainment there’s a play area and trampoline for the kids, and a games area with pool, table tennis and shuffleboard. Craft supplies and books are available to borrow, and summer evenings often have live music to bring everyone together.

Power optional grass site

Liked: Location alongside the river, pitch was spacious and tidy. I liked the hosts who had a great laid back type of demeanour. The whole experience had a great informality about it which I very much like.

Disliked: Nothing

Local attractions

There are some lovely landscapes to explore around here, whether you’re setting out on the water, taking a walk or pedalling your bike. Keeping quite local, there are nice bike paths taking you to the pretty villages of Winsum and Niehove (both about half an hour by bike), or you could head up to Het Hoogeland open-air museum (45 minutes’ cycle/15 minutes’ drive) to see how people lived and worked in the past. A little further afield, you may like to explore the Wadden Sea coastline, perhaps taking a trip to the island of Schiermonnikoog for a walk across the mudflats or pottering between the dykes on the mainland. The Lauwersmeer National Park is a great place to spend time too, or you could meet some of the local wildlife at the seal sanctuary in Pieterburen (both 15 minutes’ drive). A day out in Groningen (25 minutes) might involve climbing the Martinitoren, strolling through the colourful Old Town and a tour of the excellent Groninger Museum.
