  • Peaceful site on a farm just outside the Frisian village of Burum
  • Nationaal Park Lauwersmeer 25 minutes’ drive; Groningen half an hour
  • Communal fridge; breakfast service; low light pollution
Named after the huge satellite dishes stationed a couple of miles away, Minicamping de Grutte Earen (literally ‘the big ears’) is a family-friendly site on a 19th-century farm in the northern Dutch province of Friesland. The village of Burum is a short drive away; or (if you want to adopt the Netherlands’ favourite form of transport) a pleasant five-minute bike ride through expansive farmland. Accommodation is on level grassy fields scored by small canals. Within this peaceful, quintessentially Dutch landscape, you should be able to switch off and relax completely, with only the lowing of the cows and the rustling of the wind for company. If you’re into cycling, this is the perfect destination, with quiet, flat roads leading to places like the marshy De Twijzelermieden in about half an hour (10 minutes if driving) and Nationaal Park Lauwersmeer in about one hour (25 minutes if driving). In both places, you can indulge in a spot of birdwatching, trying to catch glimpses of warblers, snipes and kestrels. You might well be hungry after exploring the area on two wheels (or on two feet, if hiking is your pleasure). Time to set up the barbecue and grill a few sausages and veggies, which you can source in the supermarkets at Grijpskerk or Buitenpost (both about five minutes’ drive along the N355 road) and store until dinner time in the communal fridge on site. And before you set up a deckchair to watch the big star-studded sky at night, remember to book your breakfast pastries and bread for the following morning.
