If the kids have been good all year and you want to treat them to a holiday that’s all (or, at least, mostly) about them, consider staying at Camping Emmen, a leafy holiday park on the outskirts of the village of Schoonebeek (15 minutes’ walk or five minutes’ drive), close to the German border. There’s so much to do on site, chances are your offspring won’t know where to start, though the outdoor pool is probably a pretty safe bet – after all, who doesn’t like to splash about on a hot summer’s day? There is also a playground with climbing structures and swings, plus go-karts and pedal cars so the kids can roam around the site in style. In high season, the site also organises a diverse entertainment programme for young guests, with activities ranging from face painting to treasure hunts. While the kids make friends and live their best lives, the adults can have a cheeky drink on the paved terrace, with plenty of shaded seating from where you can keep an eye on the playground. And when your belly starts to rumble, you can choose from a menu that includes meatballs, pizzas and schnitzels, order a takeaway or fire up the barbecue. For provisions, there’s a well-stocked shop in Schoonebeek, and the owners can also direct you to a farmers’ market. There’s plenty to explore in this green corner of Drenthe province, and the site (conveniently) has a bike-hire facility. You can cycle along the Stieltjeskanaal or reach Bargerveen Nature Reserve (40 minutes by bike), with its flat, watery landscape.

Liked: Friendly hostess … At the end of the phone …no problem if you know you always use 0031 in front of the number !

Disliked: The pitches are grass and it was wet weather so I know it’s the season but an option or a bit of hard standing not at the far end of a wet grassy area would have been preferred but it wasn’t a problem !

Liked: Really nice camping with the needed facilities and a swimming pool. we didn’t eat at the restaurant but what we saw from it looked really good. Easy check in and no check out needed. Small camping but really nice atmosphere and good service

Liked: Nice friendly clean site with pool and bar offering reasonably priced food. We only stayed one night so didn't get a chance to check out any other facilities or the locality.

Disliked: My only criticism is their card payment machine seems very selective about which bank cards it takes. I ended up paying cash

Local attractions

A theme park aimed at younger children, Plopsa Indoor Coevorden (10 minutes’ drive) has attractions like bumper cars, a mountain-like climbing structure and a pirate ship, plus a petting zoo. Kids can also let their hair down and hit the dance floor at the K-3 Disco. At Wildlands Adventure Zoo (20 minutes), you can sail on a river inside the tropical greenhouse, ride a truck through an arid savannah and get close and personal with hundreds of colourful winged creatures in the Butterfly Temple. In addition to several recreated habitats with wild animals, there are also thrill rides like roller coasters. A vast area of heathland, Dwingelderveld National Park (45 minutes) is popular with wildlife enthusiasts, who can spot cranes, woodpeckers and birds of prey, as well as deer and wild orchids.
