Love camping but hate the faff of putting up your own tent? Then Vakantieoord De Bronzen Emmer – with spacious, well-equipped, pre-erected tents on a sprawling site less than a kilometre from the village of Meppen in the Coevorden region of Drenthe – is for you. As Drenthe is a particularly pretty part of the Netherlands, guests will be well-served by engaging in the national pastime: biking. There are 1,400 kilometres of cycle paths round here, and to not follow at least one or two would be a shame. That being said, guests shouldn’t feel in any hurry to leave the site. Days can be spent busily on tennis, volleyball or pétanque courts, swimmingly in the heated indoor pool and kids’ pool, splashingly in the site’s natural pond (perhaps best saved for warmer days), or quietly by simply setting up chairs and a table in front of the tent for calm outdoorsy days. When food is needed, barbecues are allowed on site and there are supermarkets in the village of Aalden, five minutes’ drive away, for stocking up on ingredients. Otherwise, make the most of hols by taking a break from cooking too – the on-site restaurant should sort meals guests don’t have to cook themselves.

Local attractions

Guests ought to be sure to wander along to the scenic village of Meppen (two minutes’ drive, or a 10-minute walk) shortly after arrival. It’s famed for its thatched farmhouses and tall oaks, and is an altogether far too pretty sight to miss out on. On farther flung adventures, trips to Emmen (25 minutes) come highly recommended for strolls among famed dolmens, visits to the World War II museum and traipses about Wildlands Adventure Zoo. And if that gets interests in the animal kingdom piqued, it’s 15 minutes from base to the tiny Zoo Bizar and its bats, lizards and spiders. That should prove a winner with the younger set, so keep them on side with trips to gnome-themed indoor and outdoor play park Kabouterland (25 minutes), Slagharen theme park and waterpark (also 25 minutes), and the Drouwenerzand amusement park (30 minutes). If something more educational is desirable, start with explores of Hunebedcentrum archaeological museum and Kamp Westerbork concentration camp memorial and museum (both 25 minutes away), and move on to visits to Planetron planetarium and observatory, and the Drents Museum, both within half an hour.
