Into rock? Get into this. At the foot of Namibia’s 7,700-foot Gamsberg mountain, Rooiklip Guest Farm isn't so much on a rock as part of one. On the edge of the Namib, the world’s oldest desert, this small, friendly and owner-run site is hewn from the surrounding escarpment and in harmony with the vast open spaces around it. Trees are scarce up here, so it’s the boulders and the overhangs that provide shade. Wild animals regularly pass through enroute to their watering holes and a semi-wild zebra and oryx have decided to make this place their home. Wild as all that is, this is a welcoming place to rest up in between adventures on the mountain ranges. A large pool (with even larger views) is there for dips after dusty days of desert exploration; the bar dishes up the kind of cold beers you dream about when you’re under the midday sun, and the restaurant has a menu suited to the hungry and the very hungry indeed. If you prefer self catering, you might have to go and catch, trap or shoot it, as it’s about two hours and 40 minutes’ drive to the shops in Rehoboth. On the plus side, barbecues and campfires are welcome at Rooiklip Guest Farm and firepits… fashioned from the rocks, of course… are dotted around the site.

Local attractions

As you’d expect from people living all the way out there, the friendly owners of Rooiklip Guest Farm are founts of knowledge on the local area and all the stuff you can get up to. They’ll happily fix you up with experienced drivers for a jaunt through the desert in the farm's own 4x4, or point you towards the trails if you want to try it yourself. The team can also tell you about the three hiking routes that start from the site and take you through the Great Escarpment, a rugged mix of ridges, caves and river gorges, where rare birds nest among the rocks, Rooiklip diamonds glitter in the red earth and leopard tracks line the watering holes. If you’re up for longer jaunts into the wilderness, it’s around two hours’ drive to the Gamsberg Nature Reserve, dominated by its rich variety of feathered residents and its central flat-top mountain, and to the rust red dune landscape of Namib-Naukluft National Park. Should you be heading onwards as part of a bigger African expedition, the capital Windhoek, the dunes of Sossusvlei and the Atlantic beaches of Walvis Bay are about three hours away.
