  • Spacious site in the hills above Lake Balaton
  • In the middle of a traditional village, 30 minutes from the lake
  • Bar and restaurant on-site
Ringed by mature trees, the cared-for grounds of Glamp-Inn Kapolcs provide colour and fragrance and thrum with birds and insects. Visitors feel hidden in nature, when they're a minute's walk from town. You might have spent your day windsurfing the shimmering waters of the lake. Perhaps you've been hiking far above, through the protected wilderness of the National Park. Whatever you've been up to, you'll be grateful of the on-site hot tub to soothe those weary limbs. As an extra bonus, the friendly bar and restaurant are a few steps from your bed. The surrounding village of Kapolcs combines the peace of a typical Balaton village with tempting eateries and a rich cultural scene, which comes into full flower during the July music festival. It's also a good place to sample some of Hungary's finest hidden wines and stock up on supplies. If you're taking some time out from the region's more strenuous delights, try the gentle circular walk around the village. Beginning at the Lutheran Church on the village square, you amble past an old mill to a Jewish cemetery, taking in an ancient stone bridge and a small museum in the blacksmith's forge. A pleasant stretch for those tired legs.

Local attractions

You're on the right side of Hungary's inland sea Lake Balaton, for the best walking trails, many of which lead to lookout towers with unforgettable views of the region. The most celebrated (and Instagrammed) of these is at Balatonvilágos, an hour's drive away; insiders say the Kisfaludy tower at Badacsonytomaj (40 minutes) is even finer. There's a reason for the lookout towers and it's not holiday snaps... the Balaton region has been prized since ancient times for its mineral-rich soil, fruitful vineyards and abundant lake. Half an hour away Szigiglet Fortress sits brooding above the lake, watching for invaders for the past 800 years. The region's vineyards give you the chance to see (and taste) what all the fuss was about, a popular one being at Szent György-hegy (St.George's Hill, 20 minutes). Tihany is a cobbled treasure of a place straight out of the 13th century, a good spot to descend to the lake, and to take in a bit of windsurfing or sailing. Others head for Héviz, a spa town five miles from Balaton's shores (and 50 minutes from the site) whose warm thermal lake is valued for its medicinal properties.
