Family types may well want to set up home at Holme Å Camping, in the Southern Denmark town of Hovborg, for quite some time... That’ll be partly because of the location, which wins points both for handy amenities (within easy ambling distance of food shops and bus stops) and for its proximity to all manner of days out, including Givskud Zoo, Ribe’s Viking Centre and (whisper it if the kids are within earshot) Legoland. Fresh-air days are on hand too – a fishing lake and several nature reserves can be reached with a short walk, as can riverside rambles along the banks of the Holme Å (go all the way to the coast if you feel particularly energetic). It’s not all about the days out though: hanging around on site is a fine prospect too, especially if you settle by the heated outdoor pool on a fine day. Kids can let off steam at the playground, giant jumping pillow and sand volleyball court, or beetle about the place in mini pedal cars (there’s plenty of space within keeping-an-eye distance of the pitches, so you can let them roam semi-freely). There’s also plenty of space on the pitches too, so you can feel free to stretch out a bit and leave room for deckchairs, awnings, barbecues… well, if you’re going to make yourselves at home, you might as well do it properly…

Local attractions

If the word 'Billund’ doesn’t make the kids’ ears perk up, what follows next probably will – the magic word being ‘Lego’. Yes indeed – this is where it all started, and where you can now celebrate everything to do with the little plastic bricks at the original Legoland resort and the more recent Lego House. Both are about a 20-minute drive from the site, as is the also-excellent Lalandia, an activity centre and waterpark with a sauna, Jacuzzi and epic 100-metre-long waterslide. Other family-oriented days out nearby include mini safaris at Givskud Zoo, meeting real-life Vikings (well, folk dressed as such) at the Ribe VIking Centre, and a trip to the Fisheries and Maritime Museum in Esbjerg, which has an aquarium and daily seal feeding displays. All are about 40 minutes away by car. Chillout time is easy to find among all this excitement – it’ll take you 10 minutes to walk to Hovburg’s catch-and-release fishing lake, or you could plan a day wandering in one of the nearby nature reserves. Borrow bikes from the site to get to Hovborg Plantage or Baldersbæk Plantage in a matter of minutes, or pedal for 15 minutes to get to Klelund Plantage, home to beavers, otters and a sizeable population of deer.
