  • Scenic and colourful nature reserve site in Colombian mountain forest
  • Half hour’s drive from rafting, extreme sports; two hours from Bogotá
  • Birdwatching, tree planting, stargazing, pool, small shop, restaurant
Like your hols to come with a generous helping of eco-friendly practices and a side serving of hair-raising, heart-racing, adrenaline-fuelled adventure sports? Camping el Cairo Nimaima Reserva Natural – a family-friendly site five minutes’ drive from the Cundinamarca town of Nimaima – is the spot for you. Dotted with orchids and planted with native species like cedar, the site’s a dream for guests who want to bask in nature while watching butterflies and birds flit from tree to tree and flower to flower. (It’s an active reserve too, so there’s plenty on hand to teach guests a little something about the ecology of the area.) On days when a break from saving the world is required, there’s an outdoor reading room for curling up with a book, a volleyball court for active moments, and a pretty pool to cool off in – it’s also a top spot for stargazing if distraction is needed after dark. Altogether too peaceful? The site’s in a region that’s well known for extreme adventure sports, so it’s well placed for getting adrenaline pumping too. Active types can make the half-hour trip to Tobia, where rafting, hiking, canyoning, paragliding, ziplining and paintballing are all easily done. If a chill sets in after the sun goes down, toddle along to the bonfire area to get warm, then settle in for dinner – there’s a small shop and barbecue area if self catering fits the bill and a restaurant when the family chef needs some time off. Local eats are served in the restaurant, but bear in mind that alcohol is absolutely banned from the site.

Local attractions

There are lots of sedate ways to make the most of the waterfalls and rivers that cross this part of Colombia, starting with visits to the scenic waterfalls Saltos de los Micos and Cascadas de Chupal, both around an hour's drive from base. There’s plenty else to fuel outdoor days too: a trip to la Laguna el Tabacal (an hour away) is a must to see the pretty lagoon and its floating island, and Jericó Ecological Park is an essential stop for fishing, hiking and horseback riding tours. Fancy something different? The spectacularly photogenic Desert Sabrinsky is worth a visit just outside Bogotá, a little under two hours away. Bogotá should be high on the to-see list too, but of course; the Colombian capital has lots to entertain, from museums and gardens to graffiti tours and markets, to planetariums and science discovery centres; there’s even an amusement park with rollercoasters and rides, for anyone who wasn't thrilled enough by Tobia...
