  • Peaceful campsite on Hoy in the spectacular Orkney Islands
  • Lyness ferry 20 minutes' drive, with bus available
  • Charging sockets, communal barn and packed lunches available
Off to Orkney? The stunning Isle of Hoy is likely to be high up on your list of places to see – after all, it's home to the spectacular Old Man of Hoy, towering cliffs and an array of sheltered sandy coves. Pitches at this rural site come with outstanding views over land, sea and sky – and with only a tiny number of guests allowed here at any one time, you'll be sure of plenty of space to appreciate it. Hillside Tiny Campsite is in a convenient location 20 minutes' drive from the Lyness ferry pier, which can often be reached from base via a community-run bus if you're coming without a car. This site is modest both in size and in terms of the facilities on offer, but guests staying here can expect access to a well-maintained proper toilet, charging sockets and a communal barn for chilling out with your neighbours. Off exploring? Let the site staff know at least three days in advance and they'll be able to sort you with meals or a packed lunch. A small grocery shop is also available in the village of Longhope, two and a half miles from base. Just a word of warning about getting here: ferry services are limited, so you're advised to check that there's space (on either the car or foot ferry) before booking your pitch at Hillside Tiny Campsite.

Route directions

From Lyness ferry pier, either catch the community bus (check that there will be a bus meeting the particular ferry that you are planning to arrive on) or, if driving, follow the signs to Longhope. Stay on the road through Longhope until you see a brown Scottish Heritage sign for the Martello Tower. Take the left turn there, drive past Pools Holiday Cottage on your left and Hillside is the next house on the right. If you come by bus it will drop you at the end of the road where the Martello turning is. From here, it is a five-minute walk to the site.

Local attractions

Hoy has many brilliant walks and cycle routes across the island and is a well-known wildlife haven – here you might see golden eagles, sea eagles, seals, orcas, otters and hares, among other species. A round the island tour leaves from Longhope (five minutes' drive) if you're looking for a convenient way to learn about local geology, geography, history and wildlife in the same trip. Hoy is also full of fascinating history and heritage – there's a lifeboat museum just outside of Longhope (10 minutes) that's well worth visiting. The island hosted a major military base during both World Wars, so if that's of interest head to the Scapa Flow Museum (20 minutes) to find out more. For outdoor activities, try a hike up to the ancient Dwarfie Stane (or drive there in about half an hour), or head to Rackwick Bay (40 minutes) for the excellent walk to see the Old Man of Hoy. To see lighthouses and take a trip to the town of Stromness, meanwhile, just head up to the ferry terminal at Linksness (35 minutes).

Unpowered grass campervan site

Liked: Very quiet and access to toilet and laundry, dishwashing. Selection of sheds that you could use if weather imclement.

Disliked: No shower, large enough sink to wash in.
