  • Rural Somerset site surrounded by orchards on a working cider farm
  • West Bay, Lyme Regis and Forde Abbey within 40 minutes' drive
  • Bar open on Friday evenings for homemade cider and food
Fond of a drop of Somerset cider? Then you’ll be in your element at North Down Orchard, a small family-run farm five minutes’ drive from Crewkerne. This is a place with a rich history of cider making, and you’ll be settling down right in the middle of the action as the pleasingly flat fields are surrounded by the apple trees that make up the 40 acres of orchard here. The farm practises regenerative agriculture and hundreds of trees have been planted, so you’ll be surrounded by wildflowers, hedgerows and growing trees as well as the fruit orchards. Run on biofuels, North Down Orchard certainly takes care of its environmental credentials: electricity and hot water are supplied by solar panels, composting toilets minimise water usage and facilities have been made using recycled or up-cycled materials wherever possible. And what of that pint of cider you’ve come all this way for? The farm’s own Cider Barn will see you right with their home-made cider, and Basement 17 Tacos can keep you happy on the appetite front. And if you’re here on a Friday or Saturday, Streetwraps and Ethic Street Pizza are regular street-food visitors too. For other amenities, there’s a pub within walking distance in the village of West Chinnock, plus plenty of shops and eateries in Crewkerne, along with a swimming pool where you can work up an appetite.

Bell tent

Liked: Nothing. It didn’t come any where near what the website was saying

Disliked: We looked at your website & thought wow! What a stunning place & so booked for 2 nights. The website states, despite the green credentials, you won’t be roughing it, luxurious showers & composting toilets hand crafted from oak. The field kitchen complete with fridge freezer, microwave, electric hob & kettle etc.. ‘Glamorous’ bell tents, a true glamping experience. I’ve attached a few photos of our experience as it really does not live up to how you’ve advertised it & we would like a full refund. We booked as we attended a wedding on Friday & will have a friends 60th birthday there, at the farm, on Saturday, we are unable to stay in such poor conditions. And this has ruined our weekend. Please zoom in on photos attached. The bell tent also smelt of damp which was really sickening. The wooden surrounds of the toilet seats are all saturated with urine. The kitchen is un useable, squashed beer cans to level out the cooker. The toaster, just zoom in, I need say no more & the electrical leads & sockets are just not legal. The whole of the bell tent is covered in mould. Very damp & very, very smelly. The tea making facilities on a dirty, stained table with dirty mugs. It does state in the contract if we leave the tent dirty, you will fine us £100. Maybe, we should fine you for the same. The unisex loo in the bar/barn was so dirty, I found an antiseptic cleaning spray & cleaned it before I used it. There was 1 ladies loo in the house. This was someone’s actual shower room where there were personal belongings It’s just not right. The owner called to say he will refund our money as long as we don’t leave a negative review!! We’ve yet to get a response from Pitch Up Please do zoom in on each photo.

From the manager: I'm very sorry that your accommodation was unsatisfactory. That bell tent should have been taken out of service and sent for cleaning after all the recent rain, rather than hoping it would last the remaining two weeks of the season. The site has now been closed early due to continued wet conditions. I have refunded you in full as requested. Thank you for your other feedback - some of your points will be addressed before reopening next year, but some are features of the site which most people seem to appreciate. North Down Orchard is a farm campsite – please do not book if you are expecting smart hotel standards.

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked: We liked the environmental nature of the site (composting toilets, etc.) and the rustic vibe that was simple but not sterile. Nice toilets and showers. Great price too. We hope to try the cider next time! (We were there during a v quiet time.)

Disliked: Some mixed messaging about the shared refrigerator so use with caution!

Bell tent (deluxe, no pets)

Liked: The site is fantastic. Quiet, shady, spacious, good facilities. Good shower. Useful communal kitchen. But still feels like a small intimate campsite. Lovely dog lazing around. Excellent cycling and walking from campsite. Friendly hosts and helpers were around for anything needed. We loved the pizza van and the option to buy a drink at the barn. We had the deluxe tent that was comfy, had electricity, kettle and comfy bed. We booked bedding and a log basket for a fire. That was all great.

Disliked: Can hear some of the A30 traffic, entrance from A30 means it's tricky to come on bikes with children. But that was minor.

Bell tent

Liked: Lovely proper farm setting. Bell tent was so much more than I expected! Rugs, comfy bed, kettle, tea and really spacious. Loved sitting in it listening to the owls hooting at night. Loved the walks in the area. Friday music event was fun and a chance to chat to others. Loved that the farm was regenagro with no chemicals used- hurray! Friendly David the owner potters around happy to share local info and his dog Riley steals the show with his wagging tail! Fab place we will return!

Disliked: Nothing but suggest a compost bin for veg in the kitchen area

Local attractions

The scenery around here is rather pretty, so it all lends itself to getting out for a walk – perhaps in the Blackdown Hills to the east or the Dorset Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty to the south. Destinations of choice include places like Evershot (20 minutes’ drive), the village that inspired much of Thomas Hardy’s writing, and the huge Cerne Abbas Giant (35 minutes) carved into the chalk hillside. And of course it’s also not far to get down to the Jurassic Coast for visits to West Bay (35 minutes) and Lyme Regis (40 minutes) – the latter being a great place to find fishing boat trips. Elsewhere along the coast are Beer Quarry Caves and Abbotsbury Swannery/Subtropical Gardens (both 50 minutes). For other days out, find out more about the area’s favourite tipple at Perry’s Cider Mills (15 minutes), meet wild beasts at Axe Valley Wildlife Park (35 minutes) or take a tour of Forde Abbey House and Garden (20 minutes).
