  • Small high-end rural Somerset site five minutes' drive from Chard
  • Close to Blackdown Hills and half an hour's drive to Jurassic Coast
  • Luxury facilities including rainfall showers and wood-fired sauna
Set your sights on a splendid Somerset spot for an outdoor break – Knowle Meadow Camping is a small high-end site in a tree-enclosed meadow that feels thoroughly rural but is in fact easily accessed from the A358. It’s also got the A303 only five minutes’ drive away, so this is a handy spot to have in mind if you need a stopover on a journey to/from the south west. That said, there are plenty of rewards here (both on site and in the surrounding area) for those who are able to settle in for a little longer. Guests in search of outdoor activities are particularly well served around here, with both the Blackdown Hills and Dorset Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty close by for walks, a cycle path close by and a golf course and horse riding centre within 10 minutes’ drive. You’ll be able to throw coastal activities into the mix too – it’s a half-hour drive to the Jurassic Coast for walks on the South West Coast Path or fishing trips from Lyme Regis. Keeping it a little more local, there’s also the option of taking a walk to one of two local pubs or cycling off to a nearby cider orchard and café. If you’d rather prep a picnic, you can pick up supplies at the shops and supermarkets five minutes’ drive away in Chard. Back at base, you’ll be staying at a site that puts sustainability to the fore (with features like wildflower meadows, eco-friendly toiletries and a waste-water treatment system) while also providing stylish facilities like rainfall showers, a social barn and a fabulous wood-fired Scandinavian barrel sauna (with a half-moon window so you can soak up the scenic views while you steam…)

Liked: Well equip modern facilities through out the campsite. Phil the owner was very attentive and welcoming, going above and beyond for us during our stay ensuring we had everything we needed and more. The campsite its self was well maintained, clean and tidy. The showers and toilet block was spotless and cleaned after our stay. Amazing value for money! The site is in an ideal location with gorgeous views through out. We will definitely be back to visit due to the very positive experience we had. We have also recommended to friends and family to pay a visit!

Liked: Great location, clever meadow layout and pitches "design" with grass cuts, new clean facilities and, of course, INCREDIBLE SAUNA which is quite rare in UK campings.

Unpowered grass tent or campervan site (premium)

Liked: We absolutely loved this campsite. It’s such a hidden gem, definitely deserves more visitors! The camping itself is really simple, some lovely flat pitches in the meadow surrounded by trees and the sounds of birds. The facilities are absolutely gorgeous, felt like we were in a hotel rather than a campsite- big showers, beautiful decoration, pretty luxurious. My partner loved the sauna, and we both liked the little honesty shop. Definitely try the homegrown veg! The owners were so lovely and really made us feel welcome, and we’ll definitely be back for a longer stay. The dog was happy too! Thank you both 😁

Unpowered grass tent or campervan site (premium)

Liked: Absolutely wonderful site. The facilities are simply stunning and the shower has to be up there with a five star hotel. We were offered to use the sauna but declined as we were only there for one night and had more to do. But on our next visit we certainly will try it out. It looked beautiful. We have a camervan and it was lovely to be on such firm and well levelled grass pitches. The bell tents looked absolutely stunning, but we didn’t go inside. A great little honesty shop on site. Really handy for some fresh eggs if needed and some other staples. Phillip was an amazing host and the communication was excellent. I cannot highly recommend this enough and we camp a lot.

Unpowered grass tent or campervan site (premium)

Liked: A warm friendly welcome on arrival. The owner proudly showed us around this new site. We followed a cut path through the meadow in our vw camper to get to our our good sized and level pitch. The toilets, showers and washing up area are in the centre of the site along with a wood fired barrel sauna. The toilets were lovely and clean, the showers amazing , and the sauna was a real treat. The pitches are nicely spaced out, and all linked by paths mown through the wildflower meadow. A small honesty shop sells eggs, coffee, toothpaste etc. We only spent one night here, but had a lovely time and will return again soon.

Local attractions

Getting out to explore should be easy, with a footpath leading from the site and taking you over to Sustrans Cycle Path 33. Spreading your wings a little further takes you into the Blackdown Hills or Dorset Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty with a drive of around 10-15 minutes. Keeping a focus on rural days out, you may also like to sign up for one of the experiences at Sharandys Birds of Prey (five minutes’ drive) or meet the rescued animals at Ferne Animal Sanctuary (10 minutes). If nosing around country properties is more of your thing, stroll around the grounds of Forde Abbey and Gardens (15 minutes) or visit National Trust estates Barrington Court and Montacute House (both 20 minutes). And then to the coast? There’s a fossil-hunting hub in Charmouth (25 minutes), mackerel fishing trips in Lyme Regis (half an hour) and a sandy beach and heritage tramway in Seaton (half an hour).
