Liked: Peaceful, nice field to look out on to with lots of wild deer making an appearance throughout the day. Price very good. Nice chap that runs the place. Bus stop right outside. Nice pub down the road.

Disliked: Grass to long to sit at picnic tables but it is coming into out of season so that maybe why!

Liked: Large pitch. Convenient electric hook-up. Easy going attitude of site Manager, Jason, who couldn't have been more helpful. Grass area about the size of 6 football pitches bounded by mature woodland on 3 sides, suitable for dog walking. Elsan chemical toilet disposal. Saw a herd of deer come out of the woods to graze at dawn and dusk.

Disliked: Single water stand-pipe. Gravelled pitches need to be softened a bit.

Liked: Super quiet! Had the facilities I expected (waste disposal, fresh water, and EHU) and no costly extras. Perfect for an overnight before the IoW ferry. Jason’s a lovely guy and his site does what it says on the tin! Early morning bonus of many deer just in the next field.

Disliked: Nothing! I read the amenities ahead of time so was satisfied with what I found!

Liked: Nice quiet little site, lots of wildlife, nice view across the meadow.

Disliked: Going through another site with showers, etc... to get to what is basically an upgraded storage area.

Local attractions

If you need to stretch your legs (and those of any accompanying dogs of course), the verdant water gardens and woodland trails at Sir Harold Hillier Arboretum (five minutes’ drive) couldn’t be more convenient. If you have a bit more time on your hands, climb up to the triangular monument in Farley Mount Country Park (10 minutes) for spectacular views across woodland right to the Solent. There are more hikes to be had in the New Forest National Park, where you can keep an eye out for native ponies running wild and encounter endangered otters at New Forest Wildlife Park. Wind up a day in the park with afternoon tea at New Forest Lavender Gardens (all 20 minutes) before plundering their gift shop for lavender-themed souvenirs. A whistle-stop tour of ancient Winchester (20 minutes) can include a guided tour of the splendid Gothic-era cathedral (spot Jane Austen’s tomb in the nave) and the vaulted Great Hall constructed at the order of William the Conqueror. Travel back to present day to learn about the cosmos at Winchester Science Centre and Planetarium (also 20 minutes).
