  • Family-friendly camping 15 minutes’ drive from Crewe in rural Cheshire
  • Chester Zoo and Blue Planet Aquarium both 50 minutes’ drive
  • Dog-walking area; pubs within 10 minutes’ drive
Neat as a new pin, spacious, level and divided by young saplings. That’ll be the hardstanding and grass pitches at Oakwood Campsite, a family-friendly spot bordering farmland and set 10 minutes’ drive from the conservation village of Church Minshull in rural Cheshire. All the requisites for a relaxed break with family and friends are on hand at this well-maintained site: a modern shower block with baby-changing amenities and a wet room for the mobility impaired, pot washing, water stations, chemical waste disposal, recycling bins and charging points. You may want to eat breakfast and lunch at Minshull’s Garden Centre (10 minutes’ walk), and if you fancy dining out in the evening, there are several pubs within 10 minutes’ drive, as well as takeaways and fast-food outlets in Crewe (15 minutes’ drive). Your canine companions are welcome, and there’s a dedicated dog-walking area on site – please keep them on leads around the pitches. You can also exercise them (and yourselves of course) on longer expeditions down the Shropshire Union Canal towpath.

Liked: Really lovely and peaceful place with lovely views , not to close to the other pitches which we preferred as a young couple , not far from the beautiful park Queen’s Park with a lovely cafe and very dog friendly , dogs and us loved it and would definitely stay here again!

Disliked: Showers were our only disappointment as not very powerful and you couldn’t change the temperature however very clean and very nice looking

Boundary powered grass tent, caravan or trailer tent site (XL)

Liked: Flat pitches. Very large area for our pitch. Quiet and relaxed site. Felt very safe with the coded gate and felt happy for the kids to be off exploring by themselves

Disliked: Sounds very fussy but the bathroom sink was small with only two taps and with the shape of it was square so was pretty dirty in the corners.

Liked: Absolutely fantastic site. Immaculate tent pitches. The toilet and shower facilities were super clean and modern. The site was peaceful, no rowdy or noisy stayers waking you up super early. Walks along the canal were fantastic. We will definitely be visiting again.

Powered grass tent, caravan or trailer tent site

Liked: Toilets/Shower rooms are unmatched to anything we've seen before, honestly put our house to shame! Amazing! We were slightly concerned on the 2/2 layout when the site got busy but it never seemed an issue. Would love to see the old shop converted into a wash room with a few sinks for teeth/freshing up. The site was wonderful and felt really relaxed for us with our friends. Lucy was super helpful and always felt 'around' checking the site. Our friends were allowed to pitch up just next to us so we felt close even though no defined pitch was there. Nice little walk to The Badger Inn which I must say a lovely we had a Lunch and also Sunday Dinner here. They were dog friendly and the service was great, they even offered 10% discount for service workers which is fantastic. We don't often stay around this area as it was a last minute booking but we would certainly come back if we do. No Wifi so rated as 5.

Disliked: Cleaning equipment for the toilet no one likes leaving it for someone else at least we don't a simple silicone brush. Squeegee for the shower to mop down after use which we're used to doing. Add a mirror to the exit as the road is busy at times and didn't enjoy the blind pull out to the right. Overall recommendations rather than dislikes this is a great site in it's infancy! Well done Lucy & Team.

From the manager: Hello Jay, Thank you for your super comments. In reply to your recommendations: Unfortunately, not everyone is as honest and lovely as we hope. I have had a lot of stuff stolen and even the workings of a soap dispenser taken, so for that reason I don't have anything 'moveable' anymore. The mirror, yes, I agree would be very useful, however, our local Council don't allow them! I hope to see you all again sometime.

Local attractions

Head to the medieval town of Nantwich (15 minutes’ drive) to sample local produce in the indoor market (open Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday); the site owners run a cheese stall there and offer a discount to their camping guests. You can also browse indie shops and antique dealers, admire higgledy-piggledy half-timbered houses or take strolls along the River Weaver Keep the kids happy with a visit to the elephants, big cats and rhinos at Chester Zoo, or learn more about rays and sharks at Blue Planet Aquarium (both 50 minutes). The bucket-list theme park Alton Towers (an hour and 10 minutes) has extreme rollercoasters as well as gentle rides for toddlers in CBeebies Land. Any rainy days can be taken care of in Crewe (15 minutes); simply head for the bowling alleys at Tenpin Crewe or catch a film at the neighbouring cinema. If you’re keen to maintain your fitness regime, you can swim lengths of the pool and train in the gym at Crewe Lifestyle Centre.
