  • Pitches behind a traditional country pub in the Waveney Valley
  • A 10-minute drive from canoe hire on the river Waveney and two museums
  • Traditional pub grub menu and playground; close to the Angles Way
Pub grub, canoeing on the river Waveney and waterside wanders might very well make up some of your stay at The Red Lion in the Waveney Valley. With dog-friendly and family-friendly pitches in the grounds of a traditional country pub (where dogs are permitted in the outside area only), this site is not just for the foodies, although it certainly scores highly on that front thanks to its classic menu of pub grub. The site is 10 minutes’ drive away from a couple of museums (aviation and World War II included) and canoe hire for the river Waveney, which runs through the valley. In fact, the site is just 10 minutes’ stroll away from the riverbank, where you can walk right onto the Angles Way, a 93-mile trail along the riverside. On site, there’s an amenities block with a toilet, shower room and an outside washing-up area handy that's handy for dealing with barbecue aftermath. There’s a playground here where kids can run off any excess energy, perhaps while you supervise from over a pint in the pub’s outdoor seating. For snacks and that sort of thing, Harleston’s selection of supermarkets is five minutes’ drive away from the site. Handily, there’s a local bus route that runs past the outside of the pub, so it should be easy enough to get around the surrounding area. Please note the pub's opening hours: it is closed on Mondays, open between 12pm and 3pm on Tuesday through to Sunday and open in evenings from 5.30pm to 8pm for food (and until 10pm for drinks) on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday.

Liked: The site was clean & tidy as were also the shower and toilet block. My wife is disabled & everything was perfect for her. We had dinner in the pub on the Wednesday night(steak night) which was delicious and very fairly priced.

Liked: Waking up listening to woodpeckers in the trees around the site was the best Great place everybody was so accommodating the locals were so nice The pub had a charity coffee morning which was great and even though we broke down on-site they had no problem with us having to wait onsite for recovery on the day we left so we were later than usual leaving If you want a small site in a rural location then this is one of the best places you could go Great small site would definitely go back again

Liked: Set in an Idyllic location, The Red Lion was a small, friendly sight which enchanted us during our stay. We were greeted warmly by our host , who showed us to our pitch. The pitch was a good size with newly layed turf . We loved to sit out and watch an array of birds flitting through the shrubbery around us. There were 2 toilets adequate for the camp size. There was always hot water , the shower was good and the facilities kept clean. The red lion pub served excellent food. Service was great, staff were attentive and the Atmosphere warm and inviting . It provides a good base to travel . Harleston was 6 minutes up the road with quaint and quirky shops, which we enjoyed browsing. There was a small market on Saturday, well worth a visit. Local Pub, The Cap had live music, and let's face it you can't beat live music! A short walk from the site were , platforms on a local stream where you could lauch your canoes from. Alternatively Captain Cooks Canoes allows you to hire canoes, kayaks and Canadian canoes 2o minutes down the road, if that's what you're in too. I would definable recommend this site and will be returning this year.

Liked: Nice quiet site behind pub which serves great meals at affordable prices. We only stayed 1 night but would stay again as easy to get to and 10 mins walk from river for kayaking. Toilets were near and handy. Only 2 (one had shower as well) but It’s a small site so wasn’t a problem. Hard standing pitches were good little muddy at far end but to be expected with the amount of rain and flooding we have had over the last 5 months. Would recommend and definitely be back for food as it’s not that far from home.

Liked: Friendly welcome and showed to our pitch. All facilities pointed out to us and all questions answered with good cheer. Although there was some maintenance work going on (it is still early in the season), access to the toilet/shower was always available and there was no shortage of hot water. Pub food was a good standard and good value (note closed on Mondays). Good location for walking/cycling.

Local attractions

Activities on the river Waveney might have already given you a taste for the water… and if that’s the case, you can’t go far wrong with a beach day. While the valley scenery might suggest otherwise, the coast is within driving distance and that includes Southwold beach (45 minutes' drive), a sandy stretch with an amusement arcade on the pier and good windsurfing conditions, and Aldeburgh beach (55 minutes), known for its tasty fish and chips. Those of you who have kids fond of animals, Banham Zoo (half an hour) might be one afternoon out to add to the itinerary, while Camel Park Oasis (15 minutes) is another with camels in the limelight. And for a place with play areas and farm animals, Easton Farm Park (35 minutes) is your guy. To switch things up with a history-geared visit, you’ll have your pick of a few places, including the Norfolk and Suffolk Aviation Museum (10 minutes), The 100th Bomb Group Memorial Museum (10 minutes) for historical accounts of American involvement in World War II and Bressingham Steam & Gardens (25 minutes) for a steam museum and gardens… or steam train trip of your own aboard one of the trains that are in action.
