Walking the malverns

  • Friendly adults-only site at the foot of the Malvern Hills
  • Access to Castlemorton Common and 35 minutes’ walk from Little Malvern
  • Barbecues permitted on site; walk to four country pubs
Keen to get away to the Malvern Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty? Looking for a break where your dog can get involved with the hill walking? A peaceful spot within walking distance of multiple cosy country pubs? Marlbrook Farm is here to get things started… The family-run, adults-only site based on a working horse livery yard is in the Malvern Hills AONB with direct access to Castlemorton Common and a 10-minute drive from the Three Counties Showground. Don your hiking boots and head for the common or the hills – the site is just 35 minutes’ walk from Little Malvern and under 10 minutes’ drive from British Camp Hill Fort. Those of you who’d rather mount your bicycle and get pedalling can set your sights on historic Ledbury (15 minutes’ drive or 45 minutes’ cycle) and the peaceful riverside in Upton upon Severn (25 minutes’ drive or cycle) too. Hill walking and cycling aside, those wishing to tip back a few local ales and indulge in some country pub grub will be pleased to find four such establishments within walking distance. The closest is just 15 minutes’ walk away and the remainder are 25 minutes’ walk or 35 minutes’ walk away – so judge your favourite for yourselves. If barbecues with stunning views are high on your priorities too, good news. They're permitted on site, and there’s a village shop 10 minutes’ walk away to simplify sourcing ingredients. Facilities on this peaceful independent site include showers, toilets and chemical disposal.

Powered grass caravan site

Liked: Quiet site, well set out with water and power where required. Good size pitches, beautiful views in South field. Chemical toilet disposal point.

Disliked: Only one toilet and shower available for all campers to use and they could have done with a good clean. No hot water at washing up sink although a kettle was provided. Questionable value for money, £30 per night for 2 persons + EHU

Unpowered gravel caravan site

Liked: Love being able to see the horses and being close to the Malvern Hills

Disliked: Not very obvious where the toilet is and toilet facility is covered in cobwebs but as expected when based on equestrian farm I suppose.

Liked: Marlbrook farm is an excellent location set within Castlemorton common with beautiful views of the Malvern hills. The owner is a lovely lady who always spoke when we had a walk around the farm. The area is so quiet and has plenty of lovely places to visit without travelling far. 🐴 🌳 🌞 🐎

Powered grass caravan site

Liked: Scenery, tranquility, spacious pitches ( although some confusion over positioning), watching the horses, local area, pubs a walk away.

Disliked: One shower toilet for the entire site, grubby, very unappealing. Hand Towel not changed while we were there, no cleaning materials in there to use, no mop provided for constantly dirty floor as in stable yard, no night time lighting.

Liked: We had amazing views of the Malvern hills. Good pitch sizes with lots of water and EHU points close by. North field very open and with no trees round so catches the sunshine right through the day. Great on site atmosphere, enjoyed meeting and chatting to other campers. 2 pubs within easy walking distance. Great for walks straight from the site onto the Malverns and Castlemorton common - watch out for the lovely longhorn cows. Ideal location for touring to see other areas - we did Tewkesbury and The Cotswolds. Hands-off booking and checking in; we prefer to meet the owner/manager but the pre arrival information was complete and well organised

Disliked: Loo and shower are OK but with quite a few units on site, just one between everyone is pushing it a bit even if some of the people have their own on board facilities. Had to queue for both at times; loo and shower/washbasin are all in one small room. The walk to the toilet and shower is right through the stable yard; fine when dry but I would not like to have done it in wet conditions. No lights; take a torch! The wash up is a bit of a hoot - - boil the kettle and use the sink in the "judges pavilion". That area could do with a real clean up; it was pretty grotty to be honest but with a good muck out could be a lovely facility. PitchUp says 10 pitches, UKcampsite.co.uk says 5. Well there were at least 15 when we were there, with a couple squeezed in between numbered pitches - space-wise that was fine but too many for the washing/loo provision.

Local attractions

Planning your hikes and wondering what views you might see? The Knapp And Papermill Nature Reserve (25 minutes’ drive) trail passes through an apple orchard, meadow and woodland. The Malvern ridge, accessible from the British Camp Hill Fort (10 minutes’ drive) is sublime too, with views for miles over farmland and woodlands. If you’re looking to switch things up, you might want to roll down to the Wye Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (25 minutes) for yet more wanders or watersports on the River Wye. For a peek into the past, try Little Malvern Priory (35 minutes) or Eastnor Castle (10 minutes). The latter has a deer park, arboretum and a grand castle with turrets overlooking the lake. Gawp at the state rooms in the castle or try and work your way out of the garden maze.
