  • Off-grid field site next to woodland, four miles from Shrewsbury
  • Ironbridge Gorge and the Shropshire Hills within 40 minutes’ drive
  • Dog-friendly site by the River Severn
In a peaceful field where the River Severn meanders its way through the Shropshire countryside, Leaton Wood is a simple site set on a woodland estate dating back to 1837. The historic county town of Shrewsbury is around four miles away, so you can drive down there in about 10 minutes, or if you prefer to slow down to the pace of life round these parts, follow a roadside footpath and walk all the way into town. Follow the Darwin Shrewsbury Trail through the winding streets to explore key locations in the life of the town’s most famous son, the naturalist Charles Darwin. Stroll along the riverbank through 29 acres of open parkland at the Quarry, or go for a wander to pick up a treat in the cafés, delis and independent shops. Cyclists can make the most of the quiet lanes around or check out the Sustrans National Cycle Network routes that connect up with Shrewsbury. A bus also stops right outside the site gates. Facilities at Leaton Wood are on the basic side (please note there's no drinkable water on site, although you will have portable toilets), but you can park up next to your pitch and you’re welcome to bring your dog along. It’s fine to use barbecues; the nearest shop for supplies is a mile away in Bomere Heath, or visit the farm shops in Baschurch or Battlefield, both under 10 minutes’ drive away. Baschurch also has popular country pubs for eating out, and there’s another one in Myddle (15 minutes).

Unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked: Exactly what it says on the tin. Field nice and quiet , port aloo and kitchen facility's. gated entrance only two other campers on the field. Taxi into Shrewsbury was £13 ,

Disliked: Maybe get a pitch with electric as some people may want this option and a toilet block but then that make sit just like all teh rest.

Unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked: Peace and quiet. Only a mile from the chip shop in Bomere village.

Disliked: No clue to pathway into town. This would be useful as the road is very busy and pathway overgrown. No buses stall on Sunday

Local attractions

Shrewsbury is well worth a day’s visit with its shops, abbey, castle, market and parks. Another place that many visitors make a day of is Ironbridge Gorge (35 minutes’ drive). Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its importance in the birth of the Industrial Revolution, here you can see the world’s first ever cast-iron bridge and a recreated Victorian town at Blists Hill. For more top history hits within 20 minutes’ drive, wander the medieval and Elizabethan ruins at Moreton Corbet Castle, see the Regency mansion, parkland and gardens at Attingham Park and soak up the atmosphere at the ruined Haughmond Abbey. Outdoor activities are just as easily accessible with the Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty about 35 minutes away by car. The lake at Ellesmere is good for a gentle walk and day out (plus there’s a large play area, which is always a bonus for those with kids). Or check out the unusual landscapes, both natural and man-made, at Hawkestone Park Follies (25 minutes’ drive).
