  • Farm park with views of colourful wildflower meadows
  • Half a mile from the Long Mynd and three miles from the Stiperstones
  • Firepits and shop on site; weekend shuttle bus stop right outside
Brimming in botany and with a brill back-to-basics feel, Brow Farm Campsite a five-minute drive from Ratlinghope is a serene spot for either lazy or active stays in the Shropshire Hills. It’s surrounded by wildflower meadows scattered with bluebells, buttercups, spotted orchids and clovers in the spring and summer months, which eco-friendly park owner John keeps blooming the au naturel way by avoiding chemicals and artificial fertilisers. Lush landscapes are all around this area as well as at Brow Farm Campsite, including Carding Mill Valley and the Long Mynd 20 minutes’ drive to the west for walking, cycling and horse riding in the heathery hills, and Stiperstones the same distance to the east. Not got a car (or just don’t fancy driving)? A shuttle bus passes the site every hour on weekends in the warmer months with stops by country pubs enroute. Guests who want to ditch all forms of transport can also set off on a stroll pretty much straight from the park on the Shropshire Way long-distance footpath that loops around the county for 139 miles. Sounding a little too lengthy of a walk for your liking? Take a shorter toddle then swing back via an excellent local pub less than 20 minutes down the road for an ale (or four). At the park, amenities include showers, toilets, fresh drinking water taps, firepits, and an essentials shop selling wood, kindling and gas canisters. A supermarket is in Church Stretton, a 15-minute drive away.

Local attractions

Scientifically minded sorts can get their rocks off at Wenlock Edge (a 35-minute drive), a limestone escarpment and a Site of Special Scientific Interest for geologists. History’s to be had at Acton Scott’s working farm (25 minutes) where visitors can dress up in period clothing and see what life was like for rural residents way back when. Way back when goes even further into days of yore on a trip to medieval Stokesay Castle, 30 minutes away, and times feel positively ancient while roaming the remains of municipal baths and walls at Wroxeter Roman City (35 minutes). For towning around a newer settlement, Shrewsbury’s 40 minutes' drive away and is the birthplace of Charles Darwin; the evolution expert has a trail named after him that visitors can set off on. To investigate the famed Industrial Revolution instead, Ironbridge is 50 minutes away for the Blists Hill Victorian Town museum focusing on the ‘sights, sounds and smells’ of this era.
