  • Wild camping on the banks of the River Nene near Fotheringhay Castle
  • A 10-minute drive to historic Oundle; 25 minutes to Burghley House
  • Back-to-basics grass pitches five minutes’ walk from a traditional pub
What a spot for a wild-camping break. A vast, grass field on the side of the River Nene, with the ruins of Fotheringhay Castle as your backdrop. Whatever the pitches at Castle Farm Site may lack in facilities, they certainly make up for it in the peace and calm of their surroundings. Please note that this site does not have electricity, so you’ll need to bring torches for moving around at night – and if you really can’t bear to be out of touch with the world, chargers for your devices – from home. So what does the site offer? Simple portable toilets, riverside pitches and rural seclusion. Stroll along the river to the historic village of Fotheringhay (five minutes’ walk) for a couple of pints in the local, and there are plenty of traditional and welcoming pubs in less than 20 minutes’ drive. In other practical considerations, you can replenish essentials for the barbecue (again, bring kit from home) from the convenience store in Warmington (five minutes’ drive) or do a serious stock up in Peterborough (20 minutes) supermarkets.

Unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked: this campsite is a little gem . Been visiting once a week from August to October. Pitch where you like , space right next to the river or higher up with river views. Only facilities are two portaloos but they have always been spotless with sanitiser and plenty of loo roll! Its never been over crowded and midweek there has often been only myself and a few others. Cant say what its like at weekends but i imagine there is still loads of space.

Disliked: nothing

Liked: Everything. The location, the views, the sheep and other campers we met..all made for a fantastic overnight stay. We were greeted on arrival by the lovely Kaz, we advised that this was our first ever campervan adventure and that we forgot to bring a pan. She was lovely enough to lend us one to cook our breakfast the following morning. We will definitely be back.

Disliked: That the weekend is too short.

Unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked: This site is exquisite, and we were very pleased to be back again. We were able to pitch with a view of the River Nene, Fotheringhay Castle (a mound only remains) and Fotheringhay church, which is a gem. For company we had red kites overhead. For sustenance we ate and drank at the superlative Falcon Inn, ten minutes walk away. For our personal needs the PortaLoos were spotless and well-located. For our absolute comfort, we did use levelling blocks for the campervan (first notch only). If you are happy off-grid then this is a wonderful place to be.

Disliked: Nothing.

Unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked: Beautiful site and incredibly relaxing, well looked after and maintained. Toilet facilities are the cleanest I’ve ever seen on a camp site. I camped at the top of the hill overlooking the river and watched the cows grazing in the field opposite. I didn’t want to leave. If you want the wild camp experience then this is for you.

Disliked: Nothing.

Unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked: Lovely campsite, Very helpful pro-active warden, lots of freedom of where to pitch, clean facilities and access to wonderful historic sites, good village pub and lots of places to walk.

Disliked: Unfortunately (this is no fault of the campsite) there was what sounded like a very loud fan running most of the night, I think a local farm must have been grain drying.

Liked: Loved this campsite, free to choose a spot, not marshalled but warmly welcomed by host. Facilities were clean and well signposted. The site is beautiful, I had no idea Northamptonshire is so picturesque. Views across the river, nice walks, lovely pub and even a carboot sale at the village hall. Couldn’t ask for more.

Local attractions

If you fancy having an easy day and staying close to the campsite, have a poke around the ruined castle in Fotheringhay (five minutes’ walk). It has played an important part in history, being the birthplace of King Richard III in 1452, and where Mary, Queen of Scots, was put on trial and executed in 1587. It’s worth having a look in the church too, where there are royal monuments and tombs near the altar. Slightly further afield, the mellow-stone market town of Oundle (10 minutes’ drive) is packed with Georgian architecture and indie shops. You can take guided tours of sumptuous apartments in the vast mansion of Burghley House (25 minutes), walk in the gardens, pick up souvenirs at summer food markets and watch concerts throughout the year. Holidaying with kids who need to run off some energy? Spoil them with a session in the play barn at Sacrewell Heritage Farm and Country Centre, or let them cuddle rabbits and guinea pigs at the animal village. Head for Barnwell Country Park (both 10 minutes) so younger kids can have a safe play on the wooden climbing equipment.
