  • Wild camping on a working farm in the Welsh Marches
  • 10 minutes’ drive to Presteigne and Kington; 30 minutes to Hay-on-Wye
  • Dog-friendly, off-grid; panoramic views into Wales and towards Malvern
Stay a while at Oatcroft, a remote wild campsite on the borderland between Wales and England, and explore the wealth of walking trails connecting hills, valleys and history. With Offa’s Dyke and Mortimer’s Trail passing close by and the Wych Way leading from nearby Kington through to the Cotswolds, there are routes here to suit everyone from Sunday strollers to long-distance hikers. This simple site on a working farm in rural Herefordshire has far reaching views into Wales and across to the Malverns. About a mile away, the village of Titley has a pub where you can fill up after the day’s exertions or within 10 minutes’ drive you’ll find pubs, restaurants, takeaways and shops in the market towns of Presteigne and Kington. For pastimes that don’t involve donning your walking boots, take some quiet time at Titley Pool – a nature reserve surrounding one of the largest natural open areas of water in Herefordshire. Or experience tee-time at the highest 18-hole course in England at Kington Golf Club (15 minutes’ drive). The famed book town of Hay-on-Wye – with more than 20 second-hand bookshops and all manner of intriguing shops to explore besides – right on the England/Wales border is worth a visit any time of year, but becomes a real kingdom of culture each year during the literary festival. On site you can park your car by your pitch and bring your dog along. Groups, solo travellers and families are all welcome to experience the joys of getting back-to-nature in this secluded part of the Welsh Marches.

Unpowered grass and earth tent or trailer tent site

Liked: Incredibly beautiful setting, with views to hills all around. The field we were on was really big and we had a great amount of space. Phillip the owner was very helpful, and gave us a very interesting insight into the local area, as well as answering our questions on farming. It was so peaceful at night. We saw a fox at the far end of the field, and we heard an owl too. The night sky was exceptionally clear. The local town Kington has great and friendly pubs. In summary, one of the nicest campsites I've been to.

Unpowered grass and earth tent or trailer tent site

Liked: Was a beautifully rural setting, a real getaway from all the hustle and bustle of daily life. You really do feel that you are in the middle of no where, perfect for chilling out and enjoying the views. Our host Philip was very helpful and ready to meet and greet us. Philip knows heaps about the area, he could be a tour guide!! You don't need to worry about pitch sizes here or being too close to any neighbours, there are literally acres and acres of fields and space to pitch. Great location for some beautiful country walks We went to Kington for an evening meal at the Thai which was nice and reasonably priced. Lovely campsite. Definitely the most rural we have been too, offering heaps and heaps of space. Thank you 😊

Liked: We had a great time at Oatcroft! Being allowed to be that close to nature is not something you can easily experience. Philip, our host, was very friendly and helpful and had a vast knowledge of the surrounding area. We will definitely be visiting again.

Unpowered grass and earth tent or trailer tent site

Liked: Peaceful, tranquil and camping the way it should be. Philip was a great host and helped me with my tent too (first time solo camper)! He showed me where the amenities were and a lovely guy indeed. Atmosphere and surroundings were exactly what I wanted and needed. So much to explore, and will be coming back to explore more.

Disliked: Not got any to state.

Unpowered grass and earth campervan site

Liked: Glorious views, complete peace, beautiful walks nearby, lovely composting toilet. Philip the farmer was very helpful and friendly. Ideal for those who want to get away from it all.

Disliked: People should be aware that the water supply might be complicated so bring your own water, certainly for the starter. To get to the site, you need to drive up a grassy field and along a slighly rocky track so vehicles with low ground clearance might be less happy.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: I ask the customer for their requirement as regards the water and move it closer if required,it is not complicated. I take your point on the track, three parts of it are council road,we have tried to get them to do something, people can travel on the field if necessary but not always possible is it is wet or muddy. I thought a review was of your experience of the site,I do not understand how the dislikes affected you!

Unpowered grass and earth tent or trailer tent site

Liked: Simple wild camping, we had the choice of where on the farm we could pitch the tent; in the lower field near the lake, or the top field. we chose the second option for the fabulous views over the surrounding area. Very friendly and helpful farmer, who brought the clean facilities near to where we camped.

Liked: This pitch is on a working farm. On arrival we were met by the land owner Phillip and shown to our camping area. It is a lovely spot with amazing views. You are very close to a circular walk with great scenery on tap, there is even a pub not too far away. If you are after wild camping then this won’t disappoint.

Local attractions

As you’d expect in such a rural idyll, there are plenty of ways to get out and enjoy the countryside within easy reach. Several pony trekking options are available within half an hour’s drive both heading into Wales and within Herefordshire and Shropshire. And you can hire a kayak or canoe at scenic spots along The River Wye. Dip into the fascinating history of this borderland area with a trip to the picturesque market towns of Leominster (25 minutes’ drive) – well-known for its half-timbered houses and antique shops – and Ludlow (35 minutes) with its large medieval castle. Check out listings for local events as both towns host all sorts of festivals throughout the year. This part of the world is also famous for its cider, so if you fancy a tipple you can pop to some nearby pitstops on the cider circuit at Pembridge (10 minutes) and Weobley (20 minutes) where producers will be waiting with a pint and a warm Herefordshire welcome.
