  • Secluded site in Derbyshire, 25 minutes’ drive from the Peak District
  • Etherow Country Park 15 minutes’ drive; Manchester 40 minutes
  • Barbecues and firepits; resident pygmy goats and an apiary
On the edge of Peak District National Park (25 minutes’ drive), peaceful, secluded Elizabeth Cottage Camping sits between the river Etherow and the village of Charlesworth (five minutes), in the Derbyshire hills. The site occupies a large field that backs on to ancient woodland dotted with colourful wildflowers. This is a site where you can reconnect with nature and get up close and personal with varied wildlife. The pond is abuzz with dragonflies and damselflies, plus toads, frogs and newts. Mallards, herons and kingfishers can also be seen by the water, while if you look up to the skies you might spot birds of prey like buzzards, sparrowhawks and tawny owls. If you have a licence, there’s angling at Etherow Country Park (15 minutes) and fly fishing at Arnfield Reservoir (15 minutes). A visit to Mam Tor in Hope Valley is only just under 35 minutes' drive away and splendid for a sunrise and stunning views. Guests can pet the resident pygmy goats and horses, and pay a visit to the owners’ apiary, which houses thousands of native honeybees. Barbecues and firepits are allowed, and there is a communal firepit for everyone to gather around in the evenings. There’s a washing-up area, two gas showers and three composting toilets on site, plus recycling facilities. When it’s time to stock up on provisions, a 20-minute walk takes you into Charlesworth, which also has a couple of traditional pubs. Local produce is also available at Lymefield Garden Centre and a shop in Charlesworth (both five minutes' drive away).

Unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked: Beautiful site. I didn’t meet the owners but met their lovely goats. Really serene, beautiful spot. It rained for 12 hours BUT that was ok. It meant the morning fog was stunning! Enjoyed a 20 minute walk to the pub and then a fire in my fire pit at night. Really good amenities: clean and attended. Will be back!

Liked: Had the pleasure of staying at Elizabeth Cottage Camping on Saturday night with my two children and what a lovely and welcoming campsite it really is, we will deffo be going back. This campsite is only around the corner from us really, as we are in Hyde, but this felt like we could've been anywhere. There is a small lake next to fields where horses, goats (shoutout to Mo the goat, legend) and geese. Pitch where you want and suitable ground for all camping situations whether that be in tent or tentbox. We bring our own firepit when camping but they do have some here that you can use, and a great communial firepit section in the middle which is super cute. The woods behind are great for finding firewood. We pitched up and drove into Glossop for a few hours before returning, plenty of shops there for buying all you need while camping. Despite a slightly rainy night, we had a great time and we will be sure to be back here a lot more times next year when the camping season returns. Seriously, the owners are amazing and very friendly. Looking to book here, do it!

Disliked: Nothing, all fantastic.

From the manager: We're so happy that you enjoyed your stay with us and embraced our little campsite and the surrounding area. Isn't Mo just the cutest and cheekiest goat, we love him! We'll look forward to seeing you next season.

Liked: Quiet, limited pitch site with goats, dogs, a little lake (no fishing) but a lovely little retreat with lovely hosts :)

Disliked: Shower was cold but this was merely a gas problem. I'm sure they sorted it out the same day once I reported

From the manager: Thank you so much for letting us know about the gas showers, unfortunately you and your boys were the unlucky ones to be showering when the gas ran out, a bit of a Bear Grylls, Wim Hof experience! We always have back up bottles of gas so managed to change the bottles as soon as you let us know. I hope you all had a great stay and hopefully we'll see you again next season.

Liked: Absolutely loved my stay hear with the kids there animals walking trails a pond and space for the children to enjoy themselves and run free and explore. The owners are really nice people told me we’re the local shops was and walking trails the toilets were changed daily it says compost toilets but honestly so much nicer than a portable toilet and cleaner. Camp fire next to skin area if you need them and a big communal one I really enjoyed my stay hear and can’t wait to visit again with the kids.

Unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked: Lovely campsite in a beautiful location amongst fields, but also close to the town of Glossop and about 20 mins walk to nearby pub. It was very quiet when we stayed even though it was over August bank holiday weekend, so plenty of space to pitch up. Shower was lovely and hot, a mix of being indoors/outdoors but that's what you expect. Toilets were compost type but we found them perfectly clean and adequate for our stay. Made good use of one of the few fire pits available for people, barqueues also allowed but keep them off the grass either with bricks or a standing type one.

Unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked: Could not rate the owners any higher. They are friendly and more than welcoming, taking time to speak to all campers every day,a few times a day. The facilities on site we much better than we expected. There was more than enough space there and all of the others campers were just as friendly as aisa and Neil (the owners)

Disliked: The only issue we had and it was sadly unavoidable was the weather. We sadly weren't aware there was going to be mega high winds due to a storm but aisa was down first thing to make sure everyone was OK and despite this we had a wonderful time.

From the manager: We're so pleased that you enjoyed your stay with us. You were all very hardcore campers that weekend, the weather was particularly scary!

Local attractions

Within a 20-minute drive of the site are two recreational areas for leisurely walks: Cheetham Park and Stalybridge Country Park. The former has two children’s playgrounds and a sculpture trail with timber animals. Stalybridge is somewhat wilder, with areas of woodland and moorland that provide shelter for hawks and other birds. National Trust - Lyme (30 minutes) ought to appeal to fans of Colin Firth, who can see the lake from which the actor emerged (as Darcy) in the TV adaptation of ‘Pride and Prejudice’. The expansive grounds of this period mansion also include a rose garden, an orangery and a deer park. With two top-tier football teams, Manchester (40 minutes) is a dream destination for enthusiasts of the beautiful game, who can take tours of both Old Trafford and Etihad stadiums.
