Wake to the roar of the Pacific ocean, you go to sleep to the calls of the macaws and the croaking of tree frogs... where are you? You could be Robinson Crusoe on his fictional island; or you could be living it for real at Corcovado Adventure Tent Camp. Costa Rica has a reputation for its deserted beaches and pristine rainforests, but the Osa peninsula on the southern end of the country’s Pacific coastline, sits in a category all of its own. This site on a private beach faces ocean one way and jungle the other, with accommodation in cool spacious tents all with proper beds, electricity and wifi making sure stays are properly comfortable. You don’t need to go foraging food in the jungle either (unless you want to), as the site’s restaurant takes care of that... Loads more is on offer with ease here as well: the rental tent price includes three meals, a taxi and boat from Sierpe, Drake Bay or Palmar airport, and free use of kayaks, canoes, snorkelling equipment, boogie boards, surfboards and fishing gear. This is a mostly untouched region of rainforest and mangrove swamps, a magnet for nature spotters and adventurers of all stripes. Towns are scarce, but nearby Drake (20 minutes’ drive) has an abundance of bars, eateries and shops for stocking up.

There are two boats leaving from Sierpe to the site daily: 11.30am and 3.30pm. There are two boats leaving from the site to Sierpe daily: 7am and 2pm. The boat ride is approximately 1h30min. Please note that you should be in Sierpe 30 minutes before departure.

The site lays on an impressive spread of trips, tours and activities for wilderness enthusiasts. Kayaks are free to use if you fancy a solo paddle on the Pacific, and a trail from the site leads to a viewing platform high in the trees to commune with monkeys and get a macaw’s-eye view of the environs. Heading further afield, day trips into the Corcovado National Park should be on the must-do list, for a chance to see the diverse wildlife of 13 different ecosystems from mangrove swamps to cloud forest. Some of the world's most elusive species live here, like tapirs, jaguars and redback squirrel monkeys; guided night walks get you close to the rainforest's nocturnal residents. Cano Island Biological Reserve is an inshore reef you can snorkel and scuba dive to see parrot fish, sea turtles, manta rays and octopus. Boats can you take you further out to see the whales on their great migratory journeys and to fish for marlin and swordfish. If you’re hankering for high adrenaline activities, a five-minute drive to Los Planes lets you take the high wire through the canopy, zipping over the rainforest on cables 60 metres high. If you’re more into horses than heights, then a high speed gallop down the empty beach will hit the spot.
