Ah, the Alentejo area – what a glorious spot for a holiday, with lovely rural scenery all around and a tasty spread of local food and wine to try out while you’re here. Pick a pitch at Parque de Campismo Rural Lapa dos Gaivões, 10 minutes’ drive from Arronches, and you’ll be in a prime position to soak up all the many delights of this fabulous area. This site is located within the Serra de São Mamede Natural Park, so it’s a peaceful place with easy access to things like walking trails, birdwatching spots and river beaches where you can swim or launch canoes. Life on site is pretty laidback, with guests staying on large pitches that measure more than 100 square metres each (giving you plenty of room to spread out) and are surrounded by all sorts of trees (cherry, pine, pomegranate and plum trees among them). The trees keep everything refreshingly cool in summer, and there’s also a swimming pool on site where you can take a cooling dip. Facilities at this park have been well thought out – guests have access to a washing machine, a wifi service and modern bathrooms with hot showers, baby changing facilities and an accessible bathroom. A stay in this area simply demands that you try as much local cuisine as possible – things like local sausages, cheeses, soups and fish dishes are essential parts of the Alto Alentejo experience. The nearest village, Esperança, is two kilometres away and a good place to find shops and cafés/restaurants that will give you a good taste of the area.

Positiv: Friendly helpful owners, bought fresh bread every morning to our camper and allowed us to pick the beautiful oranges and lemons from the trees. Spotlessly clean shower/loo block. Good showers without those annoying push buttons! We went a little further afield to find a campsite as early in the season. So glad we did as loved this area, so pretty with wild flowers everywhere after all the rain. Beautiful

Negativ: Electric kept cutting out, but owners aware and are hopefully fixing the problem soon.

Negativ: Terrible campsite, it’s not at all like how it’s portrayed on PitchUp - would most definitely not stay there again

Vom Platzbetreiber: Os campistas são livres de gostar ou não gostar do nosso parque de campismo. Não podem é dizer que não é igual ao que aparece no Pitchup. porque aí faltam à verdade. E também não podem dizer mal, nem da limpeza das casas de banho, nem do acolhimento, sem dizerem porquê, sem justificarem. Pois se é coisa de que nos orgulhamos é disso, da receção e do asseio, como o comprovam as dezenas e dezenas de comentários muito positivos que constam em diversas plataformas digitais. Não sabemos a intenção do sr. Leon, mas é certo que não justifica nem concretiza os motivos da sua classificação, limitando-se a preencher subjetivamente e de forma genérica a sua avaliação. No entanto, saiu do parque todo sorridente; não apresentou qualquer reclamação, verbal ou escrita, pois nós temos Livro de Reclamações.

This is an area where you’ll be able to get out into the open air for all sorts of countryside activities – ask on site and they’ll point you towards walking and bike trails, birdwatching spots, places to launch canoes or places where you can find ancient rock paintings. You’ll be able to drop in on a few wineries as you explore the area too – some local ones will be open for a tasting, but for a more in-depth experience you may like to head to Adega Mayor (25 minutes’ drive), where you can take a tour with tastings and options for a picnic or tapas lunch. If you need a little pick-me-up after that, how about dropping into the nearby Centro de Ciência do Café (25 minutes) to learn all about coffee? Among the area’s historic visits are places like the Castle of Alegrete (25 minutes), the town of Elvas (40 minutes), with its ancient walls, huge aqueduct and Forte de Santa Luzia, and the ruins of the Roman city of Ammaia (45 minutes).
