Allerbrook Meadows

Positiv: We had a wonderful time at Allerbrook Meadows. Waking up to the sounds of the stream, birds and rustling trees was so relaxing. Pam and Chris were very helpful and friendly, and have created great practical solutions for an off the grid, nearly wild camping experience. There is a composting toilet, fire pit, small weber bbq, picnic table with benches, communal fridge and freezer, and a small communal gazebo with extra bits and bobs. The shower water was warm and the pressure great. Chris went out of his way to give us local recommendations, which we really apprexiated. We were also lucky enough to have the campsite to ourselves the last 2 nights, which was a treat! I would definitely recommend this campsite for a quiet, nearly wild, close to nature breakaway.

Positiv: We had a fantastic time at Chris and Pam's campsite. If luxury is your thing you are in the wrong place. But if you want to leave city life behind and enjoy nature then this is the place to be. It's a green oasis where you can completely unwind. Chris drives your stuff to the campsite and if you have children they can also get a ride in the back of Chris' tractor. They really loved it. And sorry Chris... I noticed that we accidentally took the Uncle Tom Cobley's song (that you so kindly printed out for us and plasticised) back home.

Negativ: The air beds ;-) . But that's not on Chris.

Vom Platzbetreiber: Thank you Arno. That so made me laugh! I got the table mat at a Widecombe souvenir shop for our grand daughter when she was 2. She's now 14 and can eat a meal without spreading it everywhere and is now much more into Taylor Swift than Uncle Tom Cobley. The table mat has gone to a very good home! 😊

Positiv: A wonderful quiet location in a valley next to a small stream. Loads of space. A great deal of thought has gone into providing everything you could possibly want for a wilder camping experience. There are picnic benches, composting toilet, hot shower, fire pits, chiminea and kitchen gazebo with loads of little touches like flint and steel, natural fire lighters, kelly kettle, etc. Kids loved the swing over the stream. Owners Chris and Pam provided us with local maps and good locals advice! No running water down in the valley but multiple large water containers topped up by Chris and no chance of running out. We also hired their kayaks which are brand new. Met by Chris on arrival and loaded our tent etc into a small trailer which was towed down into the valley, so no hauling kit! They have put a lot of thought into keeping it as wild as possible but still having essentials. The shower is a minute or so walk from the camping area and next to it there is a shed with a fridge/freezer and power to charge phones. Site is covered by phone signal (useful for watching the Olympics). The whole family would highly recommend

Positiv: Fabulous small site with really friendly and helpful hosts - thank you Chris and Pam! The site is small, but really well thought out, with a kitchen tent with stove and washing up area, picnic benches, as well as a warm shower, fridge and electric socket. They only take 3 pitches at a time and we were lucky enough to book with no one else there! It’s a short walk up to the car, but Chris shuttle runs your stuff down. Only marked down slightly for child friendliness as it’s alongside a tributary, so not suitable for really little ones, but ours loved it, especially the rope swing. We had a lovely weekend!

Positiv: Our best campsite ever! It was like wild camping but with extras included. (Picnic bench, BBQ, fire-pit, chairs). The fridge, freezer and the hot shower were very much appreciated. Chris gave us maps of some lovely walks which we did from, and back to, the site. We were always happy to return to our pitch and the sounds of nature, especially the hooting of the owls.

Negativ: Work commitments meant that we couldn’t extend our stay. ☹

Positiv: We have stayed at Allerbrook Meadow twice in the last 2 years and have enjoyed it very much on both occasions. It is a fantastic location for both Dartmoor and the coast with a super choice of beaches close by. The campsite is peaceful and relaxing and the setting is idyllic with a small stream running past the pitches surrounded by beautiful trees. Chris is a very helpful and kind host. A magical place to unwind - would highly recommend it!

Positiv: We stayed at Allerbrook Meadows last summer in the rain and loved it so much (despite the weather) that we returned this year. This time it was beautifully sunny for our entire stay which was a bonus. It is such a special site - beautifully peaceful with a little stream and a makeshift swing over it providing hours of entertainment for the kids. There is also access to a fridge, electricity sockets for charging phones etc, and a hot shower. Chris, the owner, is extremely accommodating and friendly. He offered a lot of very helpful advice and local knowledge about places to go and things to do. We ran out of time to fit everything in so hope to return again next year!

And to bring another, very nice family too. We hope you’ll be able to camp here again and stay a bit longer as you have a quite a few things to tick off on that To-Do List! Love the photos, especially the starry night. It's like a nativity scene, just needing camels and kings.

Positiv: This is or second year back to Allerbrook Meadows with my family and this time we brought friends who loved it just as much as we did. It is a beautiful location with lots of wildlife -very much back to basics however there is still the option for hot showers, a charging point and freezers for ice packs - it really is the best of both worlds. Falling asleep to the sounds of the owls and the babbling brook is so peaceful and Chris and Pam, the owners are such genuinely lovely people who can't be more helpful and friendly.

Negativ: Nothing .... That we couldn't stay longer !

Vom Platzbetreiber: We were cheered when, in the depths of winter, we saw your bookings come in and very happy to welcome you back this summer. And the friends you brought too - as a birthday present. Brilliant idea! The boys were like they hadn't been away - all happy and chatty from the moment they got out of the car. And full of important questions like, 'We're allowed to wee up against a bush, aern't we?' See you all again next year, we hope!

Positiv: If you are looking for an adventure, making a campfire on your pitch while the wine is cooling in the little brook running past your tent, and you're not afraid of driving a narrow lane, this is the place to be. Large pitch, even surface, always a little breeze and jolly companions who run the place. Just room enough for three pitches and no cars direct near the pitch. In the evening wildlife makes itself heard; we've seen bats and heard different species of owls and pheasant. The campsite gives access to a lot of possible activities: beachlife, seakayaking and watersports within 15 miles and also woods an moors within 20 miles. But having a big restday on the campsite itself, doing little and baking bread over the campfire in the evening is also fun. There are kayaks and a sub for hire; this makes going co hidden beaches even more entertaining.

Negativ: There is a lot of walking to do on this campsite, so people who are not accustomed to darkness and taking a little time to get to the shower or uphill to the parkinglot will have to adapt. Toilets are dry-compost in tents and the shower is set up in a little garden shed. This wil cost you a bit more time and work to get your morning or evening shower. There is no hot water available for dishwashing.

Vom Platzbetreiber: Comparing the ‘cleanliness’ rating with that of most other reviews, I suspect the issue was the newly-installed toilet and the basic facilities associated with it. Sorry :-( I’m on the case and the next campers on that pitch will benefit from a more civilised set-up and a hand-washing facility. It’s great that you enjoyed spending time on-site as well as exploring the coastline and Dartmoor rivers. We enjoyed having you camp here and were pleased to be able to give tips on holiday outings and activities.

Positiv: Everything: - very spacious pitches in the middle of nature alongside a little creek - the peacefulness and tranquillity - extremely helpful and kind owners with good recommendations what to do in the neighbourhood - beautiful surroundings
