Soak up the peace and quiet of remote West Texas at Baird Motor Inn and RV Campground, a 20-minute drive from the city of Abilene and within strolling distance of a couple of good places to eat. Big hitters Dallas and Austin are both within three and a half hours’ drive of the campground. The surrounding sun-scorched terrain is ideal for a road trip: you’ll get a taste of rural USA, with a zoo, museums and wineries among the nearby attractions; Abilene also has a zoological garden and miniature golf course. Make yourself at home here quickly, with your own grassy area and picnic table, along with cable TV and wifi. Guests can also help themselves to a cup of coffee at reception in the morning, and use the computer free of charge.

Abilene may not be as famed as some of the cities nearby, but there’s plenty to do there, including 29 parks to potter around and a 100 year old zoo with over 1,000 animals to see. The Grace Museum, the Center for Contemporary Arts, and the National Center for Children's Illustrated Literature are also top places to spend a couple of hours. Moving on, the state capital of Austin is famed for its food and music, and is well worth a look if your road trip is in that direction. There are live performances spanning many different genres here on any night of the week, Lady Bird Lake is great for swimming or kayaking in the summer and Austin is also home to over 300 parks. Don't let the TV shows fool you: Dallas isn't all cowboys and cheerleaders. The dining and shopping scenes are spot on and there are lots of museums to explore, such as the Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza (at the place from where President Kennedy was assassinated) and the Perot Museum of Nature and Science with 'everything from dinosaurs to DNA to diamonds'.
